UNION — Susie Fernandez braced herself for the worst news Thursday afternoon when Union County Sheriff David Taylor and several other law enforcement officials showed up at her house.

She had been waiting for word about whether remains found in a wooded area were those of her daughter, Maria Fernandez, a nurse who vanished four months ago.

"We're 99.9 percent sure it's her," Taylor told her. Susie broke down in tears and hugged a relative, while others in the room sobbed and tried to console each other.

"How could someone do that," said Lonnie Mobley, 49, a cousin, shaking his head in disgust. "She was so beautiful. It's just crushed the family."

Police have said they have a person of interest in the case who has not cooperated.
