Former instructor cleared of charges
Friday, January 9, 2009
SPARTANBURG — A former junior ROTC instructor at a South Carolina high school has been found not guilty of two sex charges involving a female student.
A Spartanburg County jury on Wednesday found 50-year-old Maxie Carroll Miller not guilty of assault with intent to commit criminal sexual conduct and not guilty of committing a lewd act on a minor.
A Broome High School student who was 15 at the time said Miller last January had twice kissed her and touched her inappropriately.
Miller had worked for the school district since 2006 and was suspended when he was arrested. Attorney Ricky Harris said Miller may have trouble finding a job because of the damage to his reputation.
