State senators request audit of unemployment agency

COLUMBIA - The chairman of a South Carolina Senate panel that oversees the Employment Security Commission says he wants detailed information on how the agency that calculates unemployment is doing its job.

Aiken Sen. Greg Ryberg said Thursday he and 17 other Republican senators asked the Legislative Audit Council to examine how the commission manages its resources and complies with regulations.

Ryberg says he'll hold hearings once the audit is released.

Gov. Mark Sanford had refused to request a $146 million federal loan to keep the state's unemployment fund afloat because he wanted an audit by the state watchdog agency.

Sanford signed the request last week, just hours before the deadline as several other lawmakers also asked for the audit.

Can you say obfuscation, witch hunt, and denial of responsibility?

"Chairman of panel that oversees the employment security commission...." If he's calling for a witch hunt in the press on a commission HE was responsible for overseeing, what does that say about his oversite responsibilities?

So they'll spend a few million dollars to investigate to find a couple of thousand that can't be accounted for, so they can fire a few people and get their friends and family a job. What a great government we have in Columbia.

Thank you Gov Sanford, thank you Speaker Harrell, thank you Majority leader McCONnell...you and your republican breathern are doing a bang up job of oversite. You've really got your finger on the pulse of the problems with the state of South Carolina.

Maybe a few more burned school busses, a higher unemployment rate, a lower salary rating, less healthcare, tattered streets/highways, higher crime rate, higher dropout rate, etc will get you to whatever nirvana that you seek for the working people of South Carolina. Priorities of the working poor and middle class isn't exactly what y'all are up there doing though is it?
