Pet Helpers on James Island is a wonderful organization that has been taking care of homeless animals in the Lowcountry since 1976. Specializing in pet rescues, adoptions and affordable spaying and neutering, their Folly Road shelter is also a great place for animal lovers to visit, if just to show some love for the many cats, dogs and other critters eager for attention.
Pet Helpers encourages visitors to enter the multiple cat rooms where they can become acquainted up-close with some new, furry friends. Although it's a safe bet that each cat would love to be adopted, these felines look like they have it made with couches, chairs, high-rise platforms and cubby-hole-style bunk beds.
The dog kennel area is a little less intimate, and rightfully so. Could you imagine a room full of dogs, running wild and unrestrained? Yikes! But a stop at each cage is to be introduced to a lot of canines eager for attention. It's only natural for visitors to want to take every one of them home. On my visit, one little girl, becoming more excited at each cage, seemed intent on doing just that.
Pet Helpers takes really great care of many helpless Lowcountry animals. Whether you're looking to adopt a pet or simply want to stop by to say "hi," a visit to Pet Helpers is a good way to brighten your and the animals' day. To show a little gratitude for these good folks with a donation, however large or small, might be a good idea as well.

Back in 1985, when I was just 10-years-old, my buddy Andy Nelms and I spent the entire summer trying to catch lizards. Every time we would catch one, we would put it in a container, label it and observe the lizard's behavior. Fast forward 25 years later, and wouldn't you know it, I still make poop jokes.
