The Incredible Sandwich is performing at the Pour House next week.

If you are feeling a little "blah" after the holidays and need some groovy tunes to lift your mood, check out The Incredible Sandwich, a delightfully quirky band planning to visit James Island's Pour House on Tuesday. Formed in Athens, Ga., The Incredible Sandwich is made up of three talented musicians: Matt McKinney on guitar and vocals, Rackley Davis on drums and vocals, and Kevin Juneau on bass.

The three members of the band, all originally from Georgia, met in Athens through a mutual friend, then bonded on their love for music.

"We met each other and then a day later we started playing music, then we kept it up for the next year and a half, and now here we are," said McKinney.

McKinney was raised on music from an early age; he even majored in Music Composition at Georgia Southern.

"I've been playing music for about eleven years," he says. "My family definitely raised me on rock and roll, and my mother actually wanted me to play the guitar. I finally started playing around twelve or thirteen, and it turned into an addiction."

As for the band's name, it comes from their passion for "sandwiching" songs, which is when a band plays one song, then starts another, then returns to the first song. It's a common technique used in jam bands, although McKinney says he isn't keen on that label.

"I'm not comfortable with labels such as jam band," he says. "Yes, Phish is one of our influences, but so are bands like Wilco and even Radiohead. It doesn't really matter to us what genre it is as long as the music is pure and good."

The Incredible Sandwich's songs are danceable and has a sophistication that post-college grown ups can definitely enjoy. Song highlights include "Matt Dot Com" and "Between Now and Then."

McKinney said the band actually started off making music without lyrics.

"In the beginning we were strictly instrumental," he says. "But we've been gradually moving torward using more lyrics."

McKinney and his band mates plan for the first album to be available at the upcoming concert. The Incredible Sandwich is enthusiastic about playing in Charleston.

Funny how life works.

Back in 1985, when I was just 10-years-old, my buddy Andy Nelms and I spent the entire summer trying to catch lizards. Every time we would catch one, we would put it in a container, label it and observe the lizard's behavior. Fast forward 25 years later, and wouldn't you know it, I still make poop jokes.
