Police still seek thief who targeted church

GOOSE CREEK - A thief who reportedly stole as much as $4,000 in donations from the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church last weekend is still at large.

"Very low," hospitality minister Lorraine Wihtelich said Tuesday. "I know times are desperate but he's going to have to answer to a higher power."

A police incident report says a sum of money, which included donations earmarked for the building fund, was discovered missing Sunday from the church lock box where the collection plate gifts are kept. The box contained two cloth money bags, where normally there would be six, officials said.

Pastor Frank Palmieri said the loss could approach $10,000 when checks are factored in.

Palmieri said the brazen theft apparently occurred between 9:30 and 10:30 a.m. Sunday, when some 700 people were attending a service.

A witness reported seeing a white male in a black suit coming from the room where the money was kept. He appeared to be carrying a large white pillow case under his arm. The suspect had short, reddish-brown hair, was over 6 feet tall, and weighed about 225 pounds.

Wihtelich said the description does not match anyone she knows is part of the church. He must have been watching to see how the money was collected and handled, she said.

A police incident report had this to say about security at the church: "While observing the process, I noted that the ushers did not close the door behind them when they entered the room or when the were placing the money into bags. Anyone standing in the hallway of the church would've had a clear view of the entire process and would've seen where the money was kept."

Palmieri is asking congregation members to stop payment on the checks that were stolen. He said he is hopeful banks won't charge a fee for that service because a crime was involved. But he said the theft will likely create "a hardship on many families."

$10K from one day's worth of services. I'm in the wrong business. Maybe we can hope that it's a Robin Hood-esque type of theft - steal from the rich (Immaculate Conception is well off) and give to the poor.

So who decides what a private organization gives too? Do you know what the church gives? ANy idea or are you just one of those that advocate giving others money away?

Ends justify the means...great thought process.

mac0cm4: Some of the money was going to a building fund. Also the money is divided to pay the bills (electric, water, ect.) and for donations associated with the Church. Most churches don't make a profit from their collections....they give it back to the community in one way or another.

This church does a lot of good for the community. For one they run Helping Hands of Goose Creek. Which gives food to the poor. My parents both work with it. They are using that money to build a building where they can hold meetings and ccd. I myself have given my money for the church and the building that is until I moved away from Goose Creek.

mac0cm4, the collections were from two day's Masses, Saturday and Sunday. Also, the amount was much higher than normal because we are in one of the two seasons (Christmas and Easter) when people who normally don't attend church will go to services -- it's not representative of how much is given on a usual weekend. Even before the theft, IC's budget was slightly in the red for the year (as it usually is, unfortunately.) I'm not an office worker, just a parishioner, but I can tell you that no one is getting financially rich or even "well off" from Mass collections at Immaculate Conception.

As for where the money goes; it pays for maintenance and bills from the church building itself, for the new All Ministries Center which is used by a number of different organizations in the diocese, and most importantly for a great many charitable and social activities in the community. Since you are curious about that, IC keeps detailed records of how every dollar given is spent and those records are usually published in the weekly church bulletin -- feel free to come to Mass one Sunday and take a look for yourself. :) We'd be glad to see you.
