SCE&G gas rates decline this month
Consumers who buy natural gas from South Carolina Electric & Gas will see their January bills edge down, reflecting steadily declining rates on the wholesale market.
The utility projected its residential gas bill for the month would drop $1.43 to $135.51, or slightly more than 1 percent, compared to December.
The decline is based on average usage of about 100 therms for January.
Rates are expected to be down $29.56, or about 18 percent, compared to last January.
SCE&G is lowering gas rates for retail customers because wholesale prices for the fuel have been dropping. Residential users are now paying about 25 percent less than they did in July, the Columbia-based utility said.
The Scana Corp. subsidiary makes monthly adjustments to the amount of money it recoups to pay for its natural gas purchases. SCE&G said it makes no profit on that portion of its rates.
All fuel adjustments are reviewed and approved by the state Office of Regulatory Staff and by the Public Service Commission.
SCE&G's natural gas business serves 303,000 customers in South Carolina.
