Obama volunteers seek new missions

South Carolina political blogger Andy Brack speaks to a grassroots group on Saturday at Alchemy Coffee shop. The group arose from a local organization that backed Barack Obama's presidential campaign. The self-described bipartisan group is exploring new challenges.

What some are saying

"If we are truly going to have a government that is of the people, for the people and by the people, we need to participate at whatever level we can. Even grass roots have to start with grass seeds!"

Peter W. Kfoury, Charleston

"I am very interested with the health care plan that President-elect Obama and Vice President-elect Biden wants to offer to all Americans. As a current Ph.D. candidate interacting with colleagues, we are sharing comments, which are forward to the official site."

Rose Davis, Charleston

"For the first time in four decades I feel that our country is poised to make a substantive move closer toward the goal of a unified, caring, welcoming and compassionate society for all of us. Many of us felt the same way in the 1960s. The difference today is that instead of fighting the established government, we will be working with a government that supports our dreams."

Rabbi Robert A. Seigel, Charleston

"President-elect Obama's campaign succeeded by tapping the hope and energy of millions, so it is only fitting that his presidency should inspire efforts to improve our community, state and nation. As the chair of the (Grass Roots Call to Action's) Environment, Energy, Science, Technology and Transportation Committee, I look forward to working with committee members to identify ways to 'green' the Lowcountry and develop awareness and activism on major issues and legislation that affect us."

The Grassroots Call To Action Group plans the following meetings and topics:

Saturday: Sandy Andersen, publisher of Natural Awakenings will talk about the greening of the Lowcountry.

Jan. 17: Jeffrey Lee Knighton of Knighton Campaign Consulting and SC New Ideas will talk about his plans to blog from Barack Obama's inauguration.

Jan. 24: Dr. Sherri Jacobs and other guest speakers will talk about health care.

Jan. 31: Artist and activist Mary Edna Fraser will discuss opportunities to get involved in art and issues.

The meetings begin with a social hour at 10 a.m. at Alchemy Coffee, 11 Magnolia Road. The speaker talks at 11 a.m. Newcomers are welcome. For more information, e-mail grassrootscalltoaction@gmail.com or call 810-0088.

Scores of Lowcountry supporters who volunteered to help elect Barack Obama now are figuring out how to advance the issues he pushed on the campaign trail.

Unlike the presidential campaign, which had a set timetable and a specific goal, this new grassroots effort is open-ended and always evolving.

It's bringing new faces and voices to the table and hopes to influence not only Obama's national and global agenda, but also state and local issues.

And while the group is forming from the local organization of a Democratic candidate, those involved emphasize that their group is nonpartisan and welcoming of all ages, races and political philosophies.

Shea Onofrey, a James Island mother whose political background includes support for Republicans and

Democrats, helped schedule an organizational meeting last month at a West Ashley coffee shop, and 48 people showed up and formed what they now call the Grassroots Call To Action Group.

"Out of the 48 people that were there on Dec. 13, 90 percent I had never met before," Onofrey said. "These were all new people who were just ready to go and get involved and write letters to editors and get involved in all the different ways they could to push for change."

The group returned Saturday morning to Alchemy Coffee, a small coffee shop on Magnolia Road in West Ashley, but the main topic wasn't Obama's national agenda. Instead, they heard a veteran observer of the South Carolina Statehouse and talked about what to do next.

Andy Brack of the SC Statehouse Report gave an overview of the upcoming Legislative session and predicted that Gov. Mark Sanford's recent reluctance to seek a federal loan to prop up the state's unemployment benefits system might undermine his hopes for government restructuring.

"The Legislature is mad at him again, and they're thinking, 'Why should we give this power to any governor who can do this kind of shenanigans?' " Brack said. He then asked the three dozen in attendance where they felt the Legislature's priorities should be.

The answers ranged from general suggestions, such as improving the public education funding formula, to more specific ideas, such as providing better incentives for homeowners to make their homes more energy efficient or to generate their own power.

Onofrey, whose expertise is in event planning, began and ended the meeting with an informal chat. During the presidential campaign, she helped schedule close to 50 get- togethers for Obama and has taken a lead role in re-assembling those supporters into a new group with a new cause.

"A lot of us had worked on the Obama campaign, and we were hoping that we could go forward," she said. "We were mostly independents. There were some Democrats and some Republicans, too. We have doctors, attorneys, nurses, students, moms. We just have a broad collection of people from different backgrounds and different areas of the world getting involved."

The Grassroots Call to Action Group has formed committees for the following: education, arts and child advocacy; the economy, taxes, bailout and infrastructure; environment, energy, science, technology and transportation; ethics, civil rights, women's rights, Katrina, poverty, African-American culture, rural policy and urban policy; health care, disability, seniors and Social Security; peace, foreign policy, veteran's defense, Homeland Security, immigration and Iraq; and lobbying, House and Senate campaigns and elections. After Saturday's meeting ended, many lingered to talk about when and where these committees will meet next.

And this group isn't alone. Those who volunteered for Obama in Awendaw and McClellanville also continue to meet. That group hopes to start a community garden and help a local church with a new food bank, Anne Knight Watson of McClellanville said. It's also circulating a petition to keep Lincoln High School open.

"We're trying to tamp down the partisanship and just work on solving problems around us," Watson said. "We'll think of a name for our group soon."

Phil Noble, director of the S.C. New Democrats said these groups have a potential to transform politics here.

"Obama was able to articulate a desire for change and a frustration with traditional politics on a national level, and people responded," Noble said. "I believe there is even greater frustration and even more pent-up desire for change here in South Carolina. The same dynamic that brought about Obama's success nationally is alive and well in South Carolina and going to do the same thing here."

S.C. Democratic Party Chairwoman Carol Fowler said the legacy of Obama's campaign here is that a growing number of people know how to organize politically.

"They certainly have the capacity to get things done," she said. "Charleston had some of the best organizational volunteers and campaign workers in the state during the fall. That's why Charleston was blue this time instead of red. ... I'd like their help in organizing other parts of the state."

But Democratic consultant Lachlan McIntosh said while Obama definitely started a move for change, Charleston County's politics have been drifting toward the middle for five years.

"The mood of the county is helping Democrats, but it's not an exclusively Democratic party thing," McIntosh said. "It's people who don't want to be governed on the extreme by either side."

While the Grassroots Call to Action Group might be innovative, S.C. Republican Chairman Katon Dawson noted it's not necessarily that different from what has been going on. For instance, the Berkeley County Republican Breakfast meeting held earlier Saturday morning to do its own political networking.

"We have exactly the same thing. It's called the South Carolina Republican party," he said. "I applaud anyone for being active in the political arena, but we already have groups set up to work on those kinds of issues."

Ultimately, time will tell whether these groups inspired by Obama's unprecedented grassroots network continue to grow in number and influence.

"I think at this stage, what they're trying to do is beginning to talk about and figure out what they should do and what they can do," Nobel said. "These guys are in unchartered territory, but the road map is the road map from the campaign."

What change? From all appearances the good ship Clinton has sailed back into Washington with Obama at the helm.

Maybe when these movers and shakers reconvene they will discuss the importance of adhering to the US constitution as it was written.

That would be "change we can believe in"!

These people don't even know what grassroots is. The only thing people want now is goverment freebees. They don't even realize that the goverment does not make money, if they give anyone something they must take it from someone who makes money. This is not a Republic, has not been for over a hundred and fifty years. In a republic it takes a two-thirds vote to make a law. We are now a Democracy where 50% plus one makes a law. There is no enforcement of our Constitution for over one hundred and fifty years and the destruction of it has incresed from 1913 forward. When they elect someone as President who can not prove beyond a doubt(like my birth certificate)that he is a natural born citizen, there is no Constitution , it has been discarded by the people who put him in office.

Former Clinton Official Says Democrats, Obama Advisers Share Blame for Market Meltdown

As the world financial system implodes, Democrats have blamed the Bush administration's lack of regulation for creating the conditions for collapse. But a top Clinton regulator acknowledges that he and his colleagues a decade ago "beat back" regulatory efforts that could have prevented credit markets from becoming so precariously balanced they were "milliseconds" from disaster.

Jimbo, did you mean war profits?

In 2006 Democrats had at least $3.7 million invested in the defense sector alone, compared to the Republicans' "only" $577,500. As the war raged on, so did the billions of profits-and personal investments by Congress members in war contractors, which increased 5 percent from 2004 to 2006.

Investments in these contractors yielded Congress members between $15.8 million and $62 million in personal income from 2004 through 2006, through dividends, capital gains, royalties and interest. Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.) and Rep. James Sensenbrenner (R-Wis.), who are two of Congress's wealthiest members, were among the lawmakers who garnered the most income from war contractors between 2004 and 2006: Sensenbrenner got at least $3.2 million and Kerry reaped at least $2.6 million.

Members of the Senate Foreign Relations and Armed Services committees which oversee the Iraq war had between $32 million and $44 million invested in companies with DoD contracts.

War hawk Sen. Joe Lieberman (IConn.), chairman of the defense-related
Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, had at least $51,000 invested in these companies in 2006.

Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-N.Y.), who voted for Bush's war, had stock in defense companies, such as Honeywell, Boeing and Raytheon, but sold the stock in May 2007.

When our boys and girls are wounded the government bills them to return their reenlistment bonus. They have to return any pay they received while they were hospitalized. They have to pay for their helmets and uniforms that are destroyed in the hell of war. But they keep on fighting for these politicians' right to keep their war profits.

• Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.) $3,001,006 to $5,015,001
• Sen. Tom Harkin (D-Iowa) $250,001 to $500,000
• Rep. Kenny Ewell Marchant (R-Tex.) $162,074 to $162,074
• Rep. Carolyn B. Maloney (D-N.Y.) $115,002 to $300,000
• Rep. Rodney Frelinghuysen (R-N.J.) $115,002 to $300,000
• Rep. Shelley Berkley (D-Nev.) $100,870 to $100,870
• Rep. James Sensenbrenner Jr. (R-Wis.) $65,646 to $65,646
• Sen. Jeff Bingaman (D-N.M.) $50,008 to $227,000
• Rep. Sam Farr (D-Calif.) $50,001 to $100,000
• Rep. Stephen Ira Cohen (D-Tenn.) $45,003 to $150,000

As a former Charleston resident living in DC, it is nice to see that progressive minded folks in Charleston aren't afraid to voice their opinions. For far too long, the RIGHT has made liberals and progressives feel as though it was a travesty to beleive that our citizens should have access to health care, quality education, decent jobs and help protect our environment. Keep up the great work folks. Sooner or later, the conservative RIGHT in SC will soon realize that Obama's election was not a referendum on BUSH, the RIGHT, or FOX NEWS but rather it was a statement about America's future. This election was a testament that Southern Republicans and most of their ideas are so passe. Either they will wake up and play nice with the rest of the country or they will be a forgotten demographic.

Andy Brack bashes Governor Sanford (as he usually does) and calls his recent actions shenanigans. Governor Sanford has done more for this state, especially financially, than any recent governor. If the Good Ole Boy legislature had listened to him 3 years ago when Sanford urged them to set aside $200 million because he wanted the State to save money for bad financial years to come, we wouldn't be in near the mess we are now. Brack forgets that Sanford won re-elction by 10 percentage points in an otherwise Democratic landslide, proving once again how popular he is with the state's residents. Brack would gain more credibility by stopping his bashing of one of the state's most popular governors ever.

EXCLUSIVE: RNC draft rips Bush's bailouts

Republican Party officials say they will try next month to pass a resolution accusing President Bush and congressional Republican leaders of embracing "socialism," underscoring deep dissension within the party at the end of Mr. Bush's administration.

"We can't be a party of small government, free markets and low taxes while supporting bailouts and nationalizing industries, which lead to big government, socialism and high taxes at the expense of individual liberty and freedoms," said Solomon Yue, an Oregon member and co-sponsor of a resolution that criticizes the U.S. government bailouts of the financial and auto industries.

Whether you were Donttasemebro, TP, and the other online personas of your deluded psyche, you do nothing but insult attack and post pure childish, schoolyard, crap.

Your constant derision of other posters only demonstrates that you are the complete and utter failure, and need to put others down to feel good about your delusional and pathetic life. One only needs to read your posts and see that 98% of them are nothing but attacks and insults with nothing to add to the topic at hand. In short, you are a simpleton.

You add nothing to any discussion. Bush will not go down as the worst President in history, So far Carter is probably in the top 3. You can thank Carter for Iran, and terrorist like Hamas. Carter gave us double digit inflation and unemployment. Not to mention the gas shortages. The only good thing that Carter gave us was Reagan.

You sit there and type out your ignorant and hateful democrat talking points that are nothing more than lies spewed over and over again by mindless lemmings. Bush has kept this nation safe since 9-11, that's a lot more than can be said about Clinton or Carter.

Bush has many negatives, but he is not evil incarnate as you and the rest of the mindless, gutless wonders on the left so wish to be true.

In the topic of the bailouts, Bush would be damned if he did or damned if he didn't. I agree that he should not have bailed out anyone including the ingrates of the UAW.

The RNC is right in pointing out Bush's, acting as a socialist with the bailouts. At the least, some in the RNC still believe in the constitution and limited government and are willing to stand up and say so. That is far from throwing Bush under the bus.

Many democrats would sell out their very mothers if it were politically expedient. Oh wait, Obama, did that. Hmmm.

I have said this before..

I honestly do not understand why/how some people can feel so much blind loyalty to politicians that they do not personally know.

I do not understand why anyone would feel any real sense of loyalty to either of the major parties.

I do not understand how any thinking rational objective person can apply criticism of wrong doing solely to one party (& all of its members) while making statements implying that the "other" party (& all members) is purity personified.

This notion is naive, tunnel visioned, biased & just plain ridiculous (at least to anyone honest enough to acknowledge that no one group has a monopoly on integrity & goodness) Constantly claiming this sort of thing in emotional rants diminishes one's overall credibility.

Good heavens people!!

What makes a person so intent on proving their choice or agenda is "best". The deep level of personal investment in supporting these politicians & parties is very disturbing.

The sweeping extreme (& therefore usually inaccurate on some level) claims made by a supporter of one party/candidate against another does nothing to advance that party/candidate. Other like minded people might cheer you on & give you an "atta boy" but others who might lean in the other direction see this type of thing as childish & any valid point you might make gets lost.

If you are interested in preaching only to your own personal choir then keep it up. But if you are interested in a productive exchange of ideas then most of the tactics used on this board are failing.

I have a dear personal friend whose politics on many things is 180 degrees from my own but we mange to make each other think & each of us has changed our thinking on some things because we actually listened to each other (instead of only to ourselves) & employed logic & respect along with some good natured humor.

B_Fwank; I agree with you about GetDelerious. Looking for attention seems to be the goal of this substandard being. He/she/it is a totally lost simpleton floating adrift in a sea of insecurity while reaching out into the ether in hopes of finding a playmate.

Jimbo come across as the epitome of left wing lunacy but as you pointed out he does have the ability to articulate his points and once in a while he actually makes sense.

That's when I sometimes feel a slight twang of guilt for piling on him but he reacts so nastily that my mini guilt trip evaporates quickley.

As for the topic, the groupies are mostly of the ,save the whales, hug a forest, granola crunching, busy body home owner association types and I expect nothing out of this endeavor except a consensus that Obama is king.

GetSerious; Your 4:22 post once again shores up what most who post think of you.

You just cannot come up with one logical statement nor can you logically refute those you are challenged with.

As such you are no longer deserving of my attention and will be ignored as any useless troll should be.

GetSerious---funny thing---you left out the radical-I-have-blinders-on-so-that-I-can-see-only-left hijackers.

The thing about those blinders, which I see employed by both ends of the political spectrum: They are ugly, look foolish, & prevent the wearer from seeing how much alike he looks to all the others wearing blinders.

For those who look at things with both eyes wide open, all the blinder wearers look alike.

I believe that some of you would be horrified at how much alike you seem to the very posters you seem to despise.

My New Year's wish for all the blinder wearers is that you can shed them before you permanently affect your ability to see things only at a slant.

B_Fwank (anonymous) says...

yird, you are correct, getserious wants attention. His behavior on these forums is classic attention getting behavior.

Yird, as you can see below, ignoring getserious may make things worse.

A sick and pathetic display of;

Seeking Attention

Every troll demands attention. Over 90% of misbehavior by trolls is for attention. Denying attention in such situations usually stops the misbehavior. If a poster is constantly having to cope with attention-getting behavior however, ignoring may not always be enough of a response. Being ignored may be the reason for the problem in the first place.

For trolls who require undue attention, the temptation for most posters is to scold, nag, or coax. When posters remember that the troll's goal is to get attention (any attention), it's easy to see that scolding or nagging only encourages more misbehavior. In a troll's mind, the attention from an angry poster is better than no attention at all.

For the troll seeking attention, use the two "I's" of discipline: Ignore the behavior when possible, giving the troll positive attention during pleasant times, or Isolate the troll by using "timeout" when the troll's behavior is too extreme to be ignored.

Getserious - go to your room, you are in timeout!

As for the article, once again -

By the way, lowcountry mouth, please go and tell everyone who has lost their jobs about the great decision Sandford made (against the advice of his own republican party members) to not seek federal aid to extend unemployment benefits and requiring an audit before he would do so.

Because of the massive outcry by (REPUBLICANS, DEMOCRATS, AND CITIZENS OF SOUTH CAROLINA, he had to reverse his decision. Sandford made national news with this saga and was often referred to as a cruel person who had no clue as to the suffering hitting our citizens. Sandford had to go back and bite the bullet. He has made South Carolina continue to look like the BACKWARD state it is. Any hope or aspirations he had for higher office has disintegrated.

So please give me facts on how South Carolina has the greatest government in this country. I will reserve my statistics of fact for your reply.

preachlove; You might want to checkout this site.

http://www.scgovernor.com/priorities/...

It gives some indication of the problems that have arisen out of the legislative process and what the governor is up against to address these pediments to a better life for all South Carolinian residents.

Spare me any partisan rants if you please. Just read and try giving an honest assessment of what you draw from the piece.

Also, there are plenty of sites that go into great detail of how damaging it is to states to increase taxes and spending as it relates to keeping the population at revenue sustaining levels.

I read so much about how little is spent on education. That's a crock. If a teacher makes 30% more in New York than in South Carolina what good is it if costs that teacher 50% more to live there?

It's up to those being offered the education to take advantage of it. If they don't all the money in the world poured into the school system is not going to accomplish a damn thing.

I mention education since it is one of those sacred cows that keep being resurrected in conversations about how backward we are. Bullcrap!

Years ago South Carolna's yearly budget was mandated to be in the black. If and when that changed I don't know for sure, but I think it was in the late sixties.

I'll be looking forward to President Palin and Vice-President Sanford in 2012 after Mr. Hussein Obama destroys our economy worse than Jimmy Carter did with 16-18% unemployment, 18% home mortgage rates and 12% annual inflation. Nationwide, our unemployment rate isn't that bad. 6.7% is 1/3 of what it was under Jimmy Carter.

PREACH...we are a racist state? THAT is the MOST racist thing I have heard all day....but it is only 9 AM.

Bush was handed damaged goods from the Clinton machine, obama will receive damaged goods, and it will go on forever until we STOP bailing everyone out. I work for my money, my property, my family and I don't ask anyone for anything!! What is the rest of the country's problem????

**WARNING** You better teach your children well and make sure they get a good education...better than the one we all got. They are headed into a competitive world and won't make it without higher education degrees. Good luck!!

yird - First of all my comments (not rants) were facts. This sad episode was discussed locally, statewide and nationally. Secondly, my comments concerning unemployment compensation were not partisan in any way. I SAID REPUBLICANS, DEMOCRATS AND CITIZENS OF SOUTH CAROLINA.

My comments were refuting the fact that lowcountrymouth said South Carolina has the greatest government in the nation. That is simply not true and still no facts have been presented by lowcountry, you or anyone else. If you desire to agree with lowcountry's assertion, please present some facts on how South Carolina's government is the greatest in the nation.

Shoelaces - I did not bash the good folk of South Carolinia, only the racists, who deep down inside know who they are. Many of these racists are transplants from other states who have become and joined the ranks of racist South Carolinians. Let's be honest; we all know there are a lot of racists in this state. Please, I have lived here most of my life. South Carolina is filled with racists, just as New York City, Boston, Providence and other points North and South where I have spent some time. I will clarify however - South Carolina is ONE OF THE MOST RACIST STATES IN THIS GOOD OLE USA.

That sentiment is exactly what I tried to explain to several posters. They don't realize they are just different sides of the very same coin.

Granted, there are times when I fall into the same trap but at least I recognize that and do what I can to remain objective about the subject at hand.

I too wish for the New Year that all Post & Courier posters, myself included, learn from each other and stop debasing ourselves with party rhetoric and nasty insults.

preachlove, what exactly did Obama answer...umm...uh...well I uh...

I thought given the circumstance Palin did a good job holding her own. Where is Biden these days? They sure did a good job keeping him muzzled long enough to win the office. But either way Palin and Biden were not running for President.

I love the idea of Governor Mark Sanford running for higher level positions. I have to say I have been impressed with his honor and integrity more than other recent Governors who simply caved under "politically correct" pressure. Why should he bail out people who won't make an effort to bail themselves out?

Loose verse from the Bible..."GIVE a man a fish and he will eat for a day. TEACH a man to fish and he will eat for a lifetime." I know that isn't exact but that is what needs to be done in this country and around the world. Teach and train people to be self-sufficient not dependent on others.

We have all become a bunch of whiners who expect everything to be given to us or to come easy. That's not reality. People need to pull themselves up by the boot straps, dust themselves off, swallow a little pride, and get a job to support themselves.

The cycle of poverty will continue until the government (all parties) stops giving out freebies with nothing in return.
