--Where: The International Longshoremen's Association Hall on 1142 Morrison Drive in Charleston

National march for comprehensive immigration reform:
--When: Noon on Jan. 21
--Where: In Marion Square Park across from the Francis Marion Hotel on 387 King St. (as well as other U.S. cities)
--Goal: To urge the president and Congress to pass comprehensive immigration reform
Jose Aguirre has been a United States citizen since 1996, but he's concerned about two Mexican relatives who are in the country illegally.
"They could be deported and I want to keep them here," he said.
Aguirre was one of hundreds of area Latinos who are citizens or legal residents who showed up Saturday at the International Longshoreman's Association Hall in Charleston for an immigration forum and to sign a petition in support of their undocumented family members. Another forum is being held from 2 to 5 p.m. today.
Emma Lozano is an activist with Chicago-based group Familia Unida Latina, a group spearheading a national campaign to ask President-elect Barack Obama for a moratorium on immigration raids until Congress enacts comprehensive reform. The group contends that deportations often separate families, especially legal-resident children from parents who are in the country illegally.
Lozano, who is in Charleston this weekend, told an audience of mostly immigrants Saturday that Obama has committed to take on the immigration issue in his first 90 days in office, so it's important that they sign petitions now.
She said she got to know Obama well during his days as an Illinois state senator. Her organization plans to deliver the petitions to him through another Illinois Democratic politician, U.S. Rep. Luis Gutierrez, the day after Obama's inauguration.
"Everyone knows the (immigration) system is broken," Lozano said.
She wants Obama and everyone else to know that "it's not just 12 million undocumented people in question. It's also their families."
Diana Salazar, president of the Latino Association of Charleston, who is working with Lozano to coordinate petition-signing events in Charleston, said it's important for local Latinos to join the national effort.
Immigration is a very controversial and politically unpopular issue in South Carolina, she said. Even politicians who support reform efforts are not comfortable speaking publicly about their views.
Salazar simply wants to see a stop to raids that result in people being deported and families being broken up until reforms are put in place.
She also has said these activities will not address South Carolina's new state laws targeting illegal immigration directly.
The first such law went into effect Thursday and will require public employers and contractors who do work with the state and have 500 or more workers to check the legal status of all new hires. The requirement will extend to smaller businesses and private employers in stages between this summer and 2010.
Meanwhile, the poor economic climate in South Carolina appears to be driving some Latino workers to other states or even to their native countries.
Salazar also encouraged people at the event to attend a march in downtown Charleston the day after the presidential inauguration. The Jan. 21 march will start in Charleston's Marion Square and will coincide with others in major cities across the country.
Aguirre said it's important for documented immigrants to help others.
"Somebody helped me a long time ago," he said. "Now I want to do the same."

The poor souls are moving elsewhere and even back to their native countries. This is just pitiful. Deport them! If it is so important that the family stay together, take the kids. Will their native country welcome these kids? Did this person that is leading all of this get in illegally also?

The immigration system is as good as it's always been.
It's enforcement of immigration laws that's "broken".
A petition? Oh, these illegal invaders are exercising "their" constitutional rights granted by "our" 1st amendment to petition the government for a redress of grievances.
We dare not question that concept!

Here is the solution to this problem: SEND THEM BACK, NOW! IF THEY WANT TO COME HERE LET THEM DO IT IN THE METHOD OUTLINED BY THE CONSTITUTION AND THE IMMIGRATION DEPARTMENT! NO OTHER WAY! Sorry that these relatives might get deported, but, that is the consequence of their ILLEGAL action!

This is disgusting, is there no end to this oh woe is me I am in illegal, crap?
What will it take for our leaders (politicians...leaders?...hmmmm), nevermind, what will it take for US citizens to wake up and get angry about this invasion?
These people have many chances to come here legally. Why do we continue to cater to them. Why does Lowes have english and spanish signs? Why do I have to select 1 for english, for any call to a US company or government agency?
Stop hiring small businesses that hire illegals, and start forcing our state reps to take action against these traitors. Anyone that is a US resident and owns a business that hires illegals, are not only selfish and greedy, but traitors to their country as well.
This is getting ugly. Many legal Americans are out of work, and yet somehow these folks can find work.
Be prepared, Obama and the Dems are going to make this a whole lot worse AND there will be plenty of RINOs like McCain and Lindsey Graham_nasty, to help make it worse.
All one needs to do is look at the mess that California is in. The 8th largest economy in the world, going bankrupt.

I have a better idea. Instead of signing a petition to send to Obama, these folks need to sign a petition to send back to the people in their home countries. The petition could be demanding that they stay in their own countries but that if they must cross our borders illegally, then they should refuse to have kids in America. That way, deportation will not have such a devastating effect on their families. Problem solved. Petition the people at the root of the problem, not Obama.

These millions of illegals are no different than a forgien army invading us. Most countries shoot and kill people who come across their borders. Deprt them is a lot nicer than doing it the other countries way. Ibet if you tryed to go across Mexicos border they would shoot you. You can just open up our borders like obama is going to do. We need these people to work so americans can go on welfare and not work. The economy is growing rapidly we need these people to work the jobs unfilled by people who don't want to work. Obama is going to spread the wealth.

Birth in the US
With very few exceptions everyone who is born within the United States is automatically a US citizen. Citizenship is conferred on the child regardless of the citizenship or US immigration status of the parents.
Naturalization
Persons who were not born US citizens may also acquire citizenship through the process of naturalization. There are five primary requirements:
The applicant must be age 18 or older;
have been lawfully admitted for permanent residence;
fulfil the US residence requirements;
be of good moral character;
and demonstrate English literacy and basic knowledge of US civics. One must also demonstrate attachment to the principles of the Constitution, favourable disposition to the good order and happiness of the United States, and take an oath of allegiance.
Good Moral Character
An applicant for naturalization must demonstrate good moral character during the statutory period of residence (either three or five years, as set out above).
There are two ways a person may lose his or her US citizenship. The first is rescission of citizenship, known as 'denaturalization.' This is applicable only to naturalized citizens.

WE DEFINITLY NEED A PETITION THAT WILL HELP THEM STAY IN THIS COUNTRY ILEGALY. umm on second thought no. That is just dumb. If you are here illegally you should be deported. If you hire illegals you should be fined or better yet loose you're business liscence. These illegals are reecieving healthcare here they are sending there kids to school. I'm sure they are driving around with no insurance and no liscence. Like the guy that killed someone in N charleston driving drunk. He was an illegal no insurance no liscence.He then drove off and left the person in the road. Plus alot of them work jobs under thetable so they don't even pay taxes, and then they send money back to mexico or where ever. I was in San Diego when all the illegals were protesting out in the street waving mexican flags.(along with american flags upside down) They should have sent in the police and deported all of them that day.

Lets make some simple changes to our constitution:
1. Must be US Citizen to file a lawsuit or have rights in American Judicial System. If you can't vote, you can't file. This eliminates convicted felons from clogging the system.
2. Return our overseas military forces to protect our southern and northern boarders. Surveillance towers every 1000 meters, authorized to shoot intruders. This will create much needed growth along the boarders rather than rebuilding Germany, Korea, Iraq.
3. Must be US Citizen to own property in America. Foreign owned properties, such as Manhattan, will have to be sold back to a US Citizens.
4. Declare Islam as a form of government, rather than a religion, making no room for a rogue government in this country.
Wake up America, YOU are surrendering, quitting and giving up our country. Think of your children, they have no future!!!

Point is, there are consequences to pay with the choices you make. There are plenty of people who think they broke the law for good reason. Drug dealers could say they are trying to support their families, shoplifters are trying to feed their hungry kids-the list could go on and on. We don't let our own citizens get away with crimes.

The simple statement most people seem to forget is that "It's a PRIVILGE to live in the United States, Not a RIGHT"... Illegals must go back to their native lands and petition our goverment for citizenship. Yes, these things take time but anything good is worth waiting for. The United States of America IS NOT for the taking. You would not just knock on someone's door you didn't know and throw in your sleeping bags and say I've come to live with you. The USA is not a flop house. There are rules to be follow and put in order for the protection of us all. Back in the day when our relatives came to America there was a screening proccess i.e. Ellis Island. You were tested for communicable diseases and crimminal background checks were run. You had to have a sponser family that would guaranty you a place to stay and a job. You paid taxes, medicial cost, and learned the language{NO FREE RIDES} You must become a part of the whole in order for The United States to function in a reasonable fashion. Send your family back and get them here the right way. One Nation, One People, One Purpose.
Proud American who worked for it!

When my grandparents immigrated to the United States before WWII, they had to leave behind brothers and sisters, mothers and fathers, and a host other family members to become new citizens in the United States. That was the sacrifice they made to start their lives over. They didn't complain about learning English or try to smuggle family members into the country. They followed the letter of the law in exchange for the opportunities their new country offered them.

Sorry majordouchbag you better read again.
Since 1986 citizenship can only be revoked for certain crimes if the persons INTENT in carrying out those crimes was to rescind citizenship. The person must still declare it.
If citizenship could be revoked for traitorous acts Bush and Cheney would be the poster boys for having it applied to them. Their crimes will go down in history and rival Benedict Arnold and other notable traitors to our country.
In any event what this American citizen is doing is perfectly legal and is protected under the constitution no matter how bad you knuckledraggers wish it wasn't the case.

How is that we are going to let this happen? Why is it that illegals seem to have no problem expressing their freedom of speech... It's our Birthright 'Freedom of Speech'. Are these protesters going to be met with resistance or are we just going to continue to fuss about what is happening and not take a stand. That very street that they will march down on Jan 21, 2009 is the very street our ancestors built brick by brick and with the sweat of their brow. Where's the true courage of our forefathers who fought for this freedom. Charleston's streets ran with blood so we could take a stand. I think all of us on here should grab a friend, spouse, dog, cat or anything else that we can muster and meet them head on peacefully and let them know were not going to give our country and rights away without a fight. We fought Mighty England... We fought the armies of France... We fought savage natives... We fought the Spanish Armies... We fought brother against brother so all men could be equal to one another in this country... We fought Santana at the Alamo!!!! Now here we stand afraid of a few illegals. I know I will be there when they march down our street speaking their native tongue and carring their
flag and dragging mine on the ground. I will stand for what is rightfully mine ! Will you ?
