Teen brings hope, water to Chinese villagers

A Mount Pleasant teenager's desire to help others took him and his family half-way across the globe last year and provided thousands of Chinese villagers with access to a basic human need: clean water.

Atlee Jennings Lenes, 17, spent more than two years raising money to fund water purification systems in the poor Guizhou Province of China. The endeavor, launched as Eagle Scout project, proved so successful that 12,000 people in four communities around the city of Duyun now that have access to drinkable water.

Lenes' work not only helped these communities, but opened the door to other relief efforts in China, said Danya Jordan, vice president of development for Water Missions International, which worked closely with Lenes. His groundwork made it much easier to ship additional water systems into China after an earthquake rocked the country in May.
