Graham moving to Spartanburg church

On Sunday, Dec. 28, the huge congregation at First Baptist Church in Spartanburg erupted into applause at the mention of Billy Graham. Worshippers were voting with their hands to accept the 90-year-old as a member in good standing.

On Monday, Graham sent a letter to Dr. Robert Jeffress, senior pastor of First Baptist Dallas, expressing gratitude for years of support and love, and informing the long-time Graham associate that the elder evangelical statesman was moving his affiliation to a church closer to home, according to Graham spokesman A. Larry Ross.

Spartanburg is about an hour and half from Graham's home in Montreat, N.C., where the famous preacher, ailing, remains homebound these days.

Ross said Graham's association with the Dallas church began in 1953, when Dr. W.A. Criswell, an active Graham supporter, was pastor there. Criswell often invited Graham to the church to preach, and though he was usually on the road, Graham decided to become a member.
