School band raises $20,000 for trip
SUMTER — The Manning High School band has raised enough money to go to Washington, for the inaugural parade for President-elect Barack Obama.
A week ago, the band worried it might not be able to collect the $20,000 needed to make a trip.
The Item of Sumter reports that donations and a $10,000 grant from the South Carolina Enterprise for Excellence brought in enough money for the five-day trip.

GREENVILLE, S.C., Dec 31, 2008 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- The South Carolina Enterprise for Excellence, a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting excellence in public education across South Carolina, today announced it will provide a $10,000 grant to Manning High School to help fund their Marching Band's trip to the Presidential Inauguration. The Band has been selected by the Parade organizers to represent South Carolina in the Parade.
Joe Erwin, president of Greenville marketing firm Erwin-Penland, who co-founded SCEE with his wife, Gretchen, announced the grant today. Erwin is the former Chairman of the South Carolina Democratic Party, and was an early endorser of then-Senator Barack Obama in his bid to win the Presidency.
