SC traffic deaths plummet in 2008

COLUMBIA - The head of South Carolina's public safety department credits a sharp decline in traffic deaths to an increase in people buckling up and more troopers on patrol.

According to the agency, 894 people died in traffic fatalities in 2008, as of midnight Tuesday. Numbers for New Year's Eve weren't yet available. That compares to 1,077 deaths in 2007. Traffic fatalities last hovered around 900 in 1995.

Director Mark Keel told The State newspaper of Columbia in Friday's editions the agency has added 200 troopers over two years, to 970. Also, federal statistics show 79 percent of drivers and passengers buckle their seat belts. That's up 14 percentage points in five years.

I am not against more police because I'm a criminal. I'm against having more cops because the one's I've meet could do more to catch criminal if they wanted to but they don't. I've been robed. I found the guy and the cops didn't want to deal with it. At quitting time, it's quitting time! I have never had a positive experiences with one. Even if I got a warning. I just hate their attitude 99% of the time.

Go ahead give me the "they're hero's!" and such. They are sometimes. Just like sometimes I stop and help people on the side of the road. Give me a gun, car, health insurance, retirement, and the joy of being able to do what ever the hell I want most of the time and I will be a part time hero too.

I have a neighbor who is a cop. We chat about some pretty screwed up things he's done to mess with people. Nothing illegal but just degrading to people. I used to walk away from our conversations laughing and think how cool he was. I started thinking about it lately and a lot of people talk to cops. They probably hear stories, like I have, and they walk away from the conversation thinking "that's a cool guy". I think it could be described as Stockholm Syndrome.

That's what we need! More cops to scare the sh#t out of us so we buckle up. Instead of more cops we need better eduction of what happens when you don't buckle up. Not just pamphlets or facts but the "hit you in your face" footage of this is what you can expect if you don't wear you your safety belt. Make people watch these films when they renew or get their licenses. Use Hollywood's actors and directors who get in trouble with the law to do them as public service. Show real footage too.

More BS. The decline is because people are NOT on the roads as much.

I figured these cuckoos would try to say something different.

Give us a break, fools.

Firemike,

What does you being robbed have to do with traffic fatalities in 2008? Does anybody really care to hear that you played super trooper one night and caught the bad guy? No. The cops probably thought you were a tard because you chased after somebody who could have seriously injured or killed you. Obviously, your wallet is more important. The reason why cops have attitudes with people like you is your hypocritical, biased, pompous attitude that you display and are not afraid to voice. You yourself admit to sitting with your neighbor and laughing with him over stories he has told. If suddenly you woke up and realized that people are being violated by this guy, contact his department and advise them of it. Don't come on here under the cloak of anonymity saying that all cops are bad. You say that cops could do a lot more to catch criminals if they wanted to...you know, you could do a lot more if you wanted too, so spare us the theatrics.

Figurers lie and lairs figure. It is like the article about Spoleto finishing in the red for the first time in 13 years, the city of Charleston always gave them a "gift" after the festival was over to balance the books.
Do something with total milage driven and you will get a number that is closer.
