Body + soul

A mother-to-be can curb morning sickness by avoiding fried or spicy foods and eating multiple small meals during the day, trying to keep a little bit of food in the stomach. Some ladies will do well if they can have a lean meat, such as turkey, rather than red meat.

Some over-the-counter medications also can alleviate symptoms. Try combining a vitamin B6 and Unisom pills. They won't be detrimental to the pregnancy. The side effect is that it will make you a little bit sleepy, but it will curb that nausea.

Dr. Jill Mauldin, maternal/fetal specialist in the OB/GYN department and associate professor at the Medical University of South Carolina
