A 24-year-old woman was killed Tuesday afternoon on Intestate 95 in Colleton County when an 18-wheeler hit the back of the sport utility vehicle she was riding in, authorities said.

The crash happened around 2:30 p.m. as seven people, including the woman who was killed, were headed south in a 2006 Buick crossover SUV, Highway Patrol Cpl. Paul Brouthers said.

The truck rear-ended the SUV near mile marker 43. A 46-year-old woman from Morgantown, W.Va., was driving the Buick and a 42-year-old Ridgeville man was driving the truck.

Colleton County Coroner Richard Harvey said Monique Smith of Morgantown died of head injuries.

She was not wearing a seat belt, Harvey said, and she was thrown into the second row of seats.

Brouthers said that three passengers from the Buick were taken to Colleton Regional Medical Center, two others to Medical University Hospital and one to Memorial University Medical Center in Savannah.

The state's Multi-Disciplinary Accident Investigation Team is investigating.
