Stiles teacher up for national award

A Charleston County School District teacher is among five finalists in the state for the prestigious 2008 Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching.

Mary Meggett, a fifth-grade teacher at Stiles Point Elementary School, is one of three finalists for science teaching. The annual award is the highest recognition that a kindergarten through 12th-grade math or science teacher may receive for outstanding teaching in the nation. The program is administered by the National Science Foundation on behalf of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy.

The finalists were selected from applicants throughout the state. One math and one science teacher will be selected from each state for the award, and winners will receive $10,000, a presidential citation and a trip to Washington, D.C., for a series of recognition events.
