ST. GEORGE — Dorchester County ramped up its efforts to create jobs with the announcement of a new industrial site Tuesday.

The Winding Wood Industrial Center covers 610 acres near U.S. Interstate 95 and Interstate 26.

The S.C. Department of Commerce has certified the site as ready to go, which means the county can promise new businesses they can hit the ground running with water, sewer and other needs in place, county Economic Development Director Jon Baggett said.

Three local investors who formed a limited-liability corporation called TCC bought the site about two years ago, and several prospective employers have asked about it, he said.

"There are still companies out there looking (even in this slow market)," Baggett said. "That's why we got this site certified."

Dorchester County Council Chairman Jamie Feltner said it's something the county has been working toward for years.

"With this certified site, Dorchester County can take full advantage of our most significant business asset: the intersection of I-95 and I-26," Feltner said in a statement. "We've not had that opportunity until now."

The property is one of 68 certified sites in the state. Certification verifies that water, sewer, telecommunications, transportation and other critical infrastructure are in place for immediate development.

The South Carolina Power Team, an alliance of the state's electric cooperatives, kicked in some grant money to help pay for certification. The Charleston Regional Development Alliance, which promotes the area for new business investment, lined up a matching state grant. BP Barber of Columbia did the work.

The county also is building a center to train workers nearby. The St. George Quick Jobs Center is scheduled to open in 2010. Trident Technical College will provide training programs for manufacturing, distribution and other operations requiring specialized skills.
