Freezin' for a reason at the Polar Plunge
Why would perfectly sane people want to jump into the chilly waters of the Atlantic Ocean in January? How about for a good cause?
File/Staff
More than 2,000 people came out for last year's annual Polar Bear Plunge on Sullivan's Island.
This weekend, countless brave souls will be taking the Dunleavy's Pub New Year's Day Polar Plunge on Sullivan's Island to benefit the Special Olympics.
Individuals or groups of individuals are encouraged to visit www.dunleavyspubpolarplunge.com, where participants can learn multiple, easy ways to be sponsored for their efforts, or as the organizers put it "freezin' for a reason." Though the plunge will take place at 2 p.m., participants will begin gathering on Sullivan's Island at 11 a.m. for food and drink.
Similar events will be taking place across the country on New Year's Day to benefit Special Olympics, though the only other South Carolina event will be held in Myrtle Beach.
When making resolutions for the new year, a renewed sense of charity and good will toward others might be a good place to start. And come to think of it, Special Olympics is not only a charity worthy of support, but taking the Dunleavy's Pub plunge might also be a good way to get rid of that nasty hangover from New Year's Eve.
