Piping plovers face new challenge
HILTON HEAD ISLAND — The endangered piping plovers who make their winter home on a South Carolina island are facing a new challenge.
The Island Packet of Hilton Head Island reports that the birds will have to deal with a beach renourishment project that would run through one of their critical resting areas.
If the project's permits are approved, renourishment would begin in late 2010 or early 2011. Melissa Bimbi of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service says adding sand to the beach disturbs the areas where the tiny-beaked birds dig for grubs and other fauna.
Scott Liggett, town director of public projects, says that if sand isn't added to the beach, the designated critical bird area will wash into the sea.
