Disc golf craze makes its way to Park Circle

A friend who lives in Park Circle always talked about going to play "Frisbee golf," and I had no idea what she was talking about until recently.

Try your hand at free disc golf at Park Circle, East Montague Avenue. Tuesdays are popular nights for the sport.

I was familiar with Frisbee and I was familiar with golf, but did not realize the two had been combined to create a new sport.

Officially known as "disc golf," the Park Circle Disc Golf Course is one of the newest games in town. Played just like traditional golf, the game's goal is to sink discs into numerous baskets in as few tries as possible.

Baskets are placed in the grassy areas between the Park Circle roundabout and the surrounding streets, with the game beginning at "hole one" near the "Welcome to Park Circle Disc Golf Course" sign on East Montague (there's a really good bird's eye view map at parkcirclediscgolf.com).

Organized nationally as the Professional Disc Golf Association and locally as part of the Charleston Disc Golf Club (there are public courses at Trophy Lakes on Johns Island and Tidal Creek in West Ashley), Park Circle disc golfers meet Tuesday evenings, but enthusiasts are invited to play, free of charge, anytime.

And they do. Frequently.

My "Frisbee golf" fanatic friend is always going to play, being invited to play or talking about playing.

Disc golf's increasing popularity speaks for itself and the sport I had never heard of until recently is apparently the newest reason, among many reasons, to visit Park Circle.
