SC DOT offers online weather updates
The South Carolina Department of Transportation is gearing up for a weekend of cold, wet weather by activating its online page www.scdot.org for county road conditions. Click on “Winter Road Conditions.”
It is activated at times when snow and ice conditions affect South Carolina highways. The reports are updated by DOT personnel in each district several times a day as conditions warrant. Conditions are listed for freeways and state primary highways, which are first to be cleared during inclement winter weather.
The DOT reported a mixture of rain, sleet, and snow falling in Greenville and Spartanburg Counties today.
There was a little accumulation on U.S. 25 and U.S. 276 near the North Carolina border. Bridges are being salted and conditions monitored. Temperatures are between 34 and 38 degrees.
Anti-icing materials have been placed in counties including Anderson, York and Cherokee in anticipation of frozen precipitation occurring later tonight.
No DOT maintenance staff activity report was posted for Lowcountry roads as of early afternoon. Statewide, DOT has responded to the weather by deploying 99 maintenance employees, 132 tons of salt, 26 tons of sand and 8,558 gallons of salt brine. It has mobilized 43 pieces of road-clearing equipment including snow plows, salt spreaders, sprayers and graders.
