Driver killed in pickup truck crash
A 62-year-old Georgia man was killed and his wife was injured Wednesday when his pickup truck ran off the road, struck a tree and caught fire on Interstate 95 in Colleton County.
The 2008 Chevrolet pickup was traveling southbound at mile marker 52 about 3:20 p.m. when the driver apparently lost control and went off the side of the road, said Lance Cpl. Bob Beres of the S.C. Highway Patrol.
The driver, Wayne Louis Rilliet II, of Statesboro, was killed on impact, Colleton County Deputy Coroner Richard Carter said.
His wife, Susan Ellen Rilliet, 53, was flown by Meducare helicopter to Medical University Hospital, the Highway Patrol said.
A witness reported that the pickup slowly veered off the road until it ran into a pine tree, Carter said. The witness pulled the woman out of the car after it caught fire, Carter said.
The collision is under investigation by the Highway Patrol.
