Police charge 4 with burglary

Wednesday, December 16, 2009

Charleston police arrested four people Tuesday accused of breaking into storage containers behind a Savannah Highway business.

Police were called to Carolina Rod & Gun at 1319 Savannah Highway about 4 a.m. for an alarm on the storage containers behind the business, police public information officer Charles Francis said.

Officers found three people nearby. While talking with them, they learned that a getaway vehicle had been parked down the street, Francis said.

Police spotted the vehicle and apprehended the driver, a 15-year-old boy, Francis said.

Burglary tools, along with other items, were recovered from the scene. A stun gun, handgun and a shotgun were found in the vehicle.

Darren A. Simmons, 24, of Lark Street, Summerville, is charged with second-degree burglary and unlawful carrying of a handgun, Francis said.

Charged with second-degree burglary are Lamar R. Jones, 18, of Germantown Road, Summerville; Jessica Leigh Kelly, 17, of Two Notch Road, Lexington; and the 15-year-old, whose name was withheld because of his age.

The three adults were being held in Charleston County jail pending a bond hearing. The juvenile is being held in the county's juvenile detention center.
