Vans collide near Columbia; both drivers killed

COLUMBIA — Authorities say a South Carolina woman spoke her final words on a cell phone as a van came toward her in the wrong lane.

The State newspaper of Columbia reports Tuesday that 60-year-old Brenda Ross of Sumter was on her cell Sunday evening when she realized something was wrong.

Richland County Coroner Gary Watts said she told the person on the other end of the phone a vehicle was "coming the wrong way," just before impact. That person then drove to the scene.

Both Ross and the other driver, 52-year-old Xavion Perry of Hopkins, died in the crash in the Horrell Hill community east of Columbia.

Watts said Ross was returning to Sumter in her van after visiting her daughter in Greenville.

The state Highway Patrol is investigating.
