Woman shot, left in car trunk
WALTERBORO -- A 78-year-old Hampton County woman who was kidnapped during a home invasion early Monday was in stable condition after she was shot and left for dead in the trunk of a car, authorities said.
Margaret Gooding was found alive in the trunk of her car in Walterboro, Hampton County Sheriff T.C. Smalls said. She was flown to Medical University Hospital and was in stable condition, Smalls said. He said she was shot at least once in the abdomen, possibly twice.
Gooding was taken from her home in Miley about 1:30 a.m. Monday, authorities said.
About 4 p.m., Colleton County authorities found a woman in the trunk of a car on Highland Avenue, just off Hampton Street, near Walterboro. That's about 25 miles from her home.
Authorities said they are investigating persons of interest in the case.
Smalls said he expects to release more details today.
