German firm will expand to Berkeley

A German company's slick business will bring a few new jobs to Berkeley County next year.
Mankiewicz Coatings, which mixes liquids that are painted onto boats, laptop computers and airplanes as protective coatings, said Thursday that it will open a small operation next summer in an empty building off Clements Ferry Road.
The $2 million investment will create about 25 jobs during the next five years, the company said, allowing it to tap into state and local incentives.
Mankiewicz , which has operated a plant in Simpsonville for about 15 years, is expanding its South Carolina presence because of the state's business friendly climate and access to the port, said company executive Peter Dietz.
He declined to comment further about the company's growth.
The Berkeley County location will store materials that the company ships to and from its German parent company, Mankiewicz Gebr. & Co.
The company also could blend some of its products at the new site, according to the Charleston Regional Development Alliance, which markets the three-county area as a business destination.
The company's coating products are sold to manufacturers in the aviation, automotive and marine industries. Another business division targets companies that need protective coatings for agricultural machinery, electronics and office equipment.
Some of its coatings have special properties, such as antimicrobial characteristics that are useful in the medical industry.
