Caviar does caviar

Caviar & Bananas, 51 George St., will host a caviar tasting at 6 p.m. Dec. 10. Five types of caviar will be featured, including Black River osetra and American caviars such as white sturgeon, Georgia sturgeon, paddlefish and salmon roe. The caviar will be served with a featured sparkling wine.

Dinner party

Chef Nate Whiting, formerly of the Dining Room at Woodlands and now executive chef at Tristan, is hosting a four-course dinner, along with amuse-bouche, intermezzo and wine pairings at 7 p.m. Dec. 13. Reservations are required and can be made at 534-2155. The cost is $75 per person. Tristan is at 55 N. Market St.

Feed the Need

The humanitarian program continues, as the restaurant community and chefs feed those in need:

--Dec. 9, chef Jeremiah Bacon of Carolina's at Neighborhood House.

--Dec. 16, Longhorn Steakhouse at Meals on Wheels.

--Dec. 23, Longhorn Steakhouse at Crisis Ministries.

Sweet 16

Slightly North of Broad is celebrating its 16-year anniversary Tuesday with special "Sweet 16"-themed offerings and festivities for lunch and dinner guests.

To celebrate in the traditional fashion, several pink-themed specials will be featured. There will be drawings for gift certificates and merchandise.

Available are $16 dinner menu items, "Drink Pink" specialty cocktails, complimentary birthday cake during lunch, S.N.O.B. T-shirts and hats for $16, complimentary sweets to take home following dinner and if you are "pretty in pink," you will receive a complimentary glass of pink sparkling wine with dinner. New 'q' in town

Woody's Bar-B-Q has opened in Mount Pleasant at 1109 Park West Blvd. Call 670-3893 for hours.

Taco Tuesdays

Jim 'N Nick's Southern Kitchen has launched a new taco menu Tuesdays. Try a taco with a Southern soul for $2.49 each. All Mexican beers are specially priced, and appetizers wear their Mexican accents.

Chili cook-off

Head to the Charleston Maritime Center at 10 Wharf St. on Saturday and feast on chili for a cause. The Charleston Animal Society is the beneficiary of this fun-filled afternoon. Join media and chef personalities along with some elected officials, celebrity chef judges and returning chili champs. There will be a Kids Fun Zone, too. Tickets are $25 for adults and $10 for children 10 and up. Call 329-1546. Tickets also will be sold at the door.

In tune with seasons

The Swamp Fox Restaurant at the Francis Marion Hotel, 387 King St., continues the popular farmers market menu through the holidays. New pub

Two Rivers Tavern has been selected for the name of the new pub on Daniel Island to replace the former McCaffrey's on Seven Farms Drive. An opening is planned this month.

New menu at Seel's

Back in business

Beef O'Brady's is back in business in Mount Pleasant's Belle Hall Shopping Center with a new owner, new menu and full-service bar.

Royal treatment

The Ocean Room at The Sanctuary at Kiawah Island Golf Resort, along with Diageo North America Inc., will host a special "Crown Royal Pairing Dinner" on Dec. 10.

The dinner will consist of a four-course meal created by The Ocean Room's chef de cuisine, Nathan Thurston, paired with Crown Royal, Crown Royal Reserve, Crown Royal Cask 16 and Crown Royal XR. Roxanne Burkett, Diageo brand ambassador and expert on Crown Royal, will host the dinner, discussing Crown Royal and how the whiskey complements each course.

The event will begin at 6:30 p.m. with a cocktail reception offering Crown Royal libations followed by dinner at 7 p.m.. The cost of the Crown Royal Dinner is $59 per person (not including taxes and gratuity). Call 768-6253.

Happy five years

Food-related film

A viewing of the film "Terra Madre" will happen 5-7 p.m. tonight at the College of Charleston Education Center Room 118, 25 St. Phillips St. The documentary is loosely structured around two gigantic events called "Terra Madre," hosted by the Slow Food movement in 2006 and 2008.

More than 6,000 cooks, farmers, shepherds, and fishermen from more than 130 countries gathered to celebrate the worldwide movement. Slow Food Charleston, in coordination with the Charleston Wine + Food Festival, will award two scholarships to Terra Madre in October 2010.
