An argument over the South Carolina-Clemson football game came to blows Saturday at a downtown bar.

An off-duty police officer and another witness told Charleston police officers that they were at the Midtown Bar and Grill on King Street when they saw a man punch another man three times in the head and nose at 10:55 p.m.

The suspect then shoved the 29-year-old victim into the kitchen, damaging $962 worth of dishes, food and kitchen supplies, according to a police report.

The victim told officers he was arguing with the suspect about that afternoon's game when the suspect punched him three times in the nose before shoving him through the door.

Employees and off-duty police officers separated the two men. The victim, who had redness around his face and nose, declined EMS treatment.

The victim and the owner of the restaurant told police they wanted to pursue charges against the suspect.

Police charged Marshall Legrand Pierce, 29, of Mount Pleasant with simple assault and damage to real property. He was released from the Charleston County Detention Center on his own recognizance Sunday morning.
