Woman wants to change Congress

West Ashley resident hopes to enroll 40 million people for her group

Several years ago, after getting fed up with rising property taxes for Berkeley County's schools, Catherine Welborn got politically active, formed a nonprofit group called Citizens for Reasonable Taxation and began working to change the political makeup of the county's School Board, ultimately helping three new members win seats.

Today, Welborn is wading back into political waters, but instead of placing candidates' signs in her front yard, she is using the Internet.

photo

Catherine Welborn checks her Web presence for Change the Congress in 2010 last week as her husband, Paul, watches. She hopes members will identify 'keeper' congressmen and learn more about the issues.

And instead of focusing on local officials, she's targeting the U.S. Congress.

Welborn, who moved to West Ashley shortly after her husband, Paul, lost a 2007 Berkeley County Council race, began signing up others in her Change the Congress in 2010 effort.

The group already is registered with the Federal Election Commission. Since its launch on July 21, she has signed up more than 6,000 members, and Welborn hopes to double her numbers each week until she hits her incredibly ambitious goal of 40 million.

Welborn said her effort is not affiliated with a political party or built around a single issue or interest group. She acknowledges that her motivation is similar to that of many Tea Party protesters: a need to voice concern about the rising debt from the stimulus bill as well as health care reform and the pending cap and trade energy bill.

"We want our country to be fiscally responsible, just like we have to be," she said. "I admire (U.S. Sen.) Jim DeMint (R-S.C.) because he doesn't do earmarks. I believe earmarks are corrupt."

Aside from signing up 40 million members, though, Welborn's goals are less clear. She said she hopes members can identify good senators and representatives (she calls them "keepers") and learn more about the issues. She also hopes her effort will snowball with media attention and even generate enough money for some paid political advertising.

College of Charleston political science professor Lynne Ford said the last thing she would want to do is criticize anyone for trying to get more involved in their government -- "That's a fantastically good thing" -- but she questions if Welborn's effort will bear fruit.

"You have to give people a task. They're not just going to hear a rallying cry and take to the streets," she said.

"People are busy. They don't care much for politics."

Ford notes that President Barack Obama successfully used the Internet to raise money and to urge people to attend campaign meetings. His campaign also used the Web to collect supporters' contact information and send them regular updates.

"You have to be somewhat aware of what motivates people and what the Internet can do and cannot do," Ford said. "It's a tool, like a hammer or screwdriver."

Welborn, who estimates she spends more than 50 hours a week on her effort, said her members are aware and active. Some of them even have plowed through the 1,000-plus pages of the Congressional health care reform bill. She knows they ultimately will make or break the effort. "It's not about me," she said. "I only have one vote."

Despite help from her husband, Paul, who works as a business consultant, she is having technical difficulties communicating online with her members.

Ford notes it's difficult to change Congress, even when its public approval rating sinks to new lows.

"While people might have tremendous anger for Congress as an institution, they like their own member," she said.

And Ford expects both the Tea Parties and efforts like Welborn's to fade as Congress gets back down to business this fall.

"August is just a crazy month. Congress is out. Members are out in their communities. People aren't back in a routine yet. They've got time on their hands," she said. "The good news in all of this is that it's dawning on people that elections have consequences. You cast your vote, and the people who win get to set the course."

Yes after 8 years of the worst President our country has ever had repairing the damage will take more than a few months. It will take time to repair our country from the "course" set by Bush and his criminal administration.

If this woman thinks DuhMint is da man she is just another fruit loopy wingnut idiot who needs to have her head examined.

THAT'S WHERE WE HAVE A PROBLEM, TOO MANY PEOPLE TODAY ARE TOO BUSY TO TAKE THE TIME TO INVESTIGATE THE ISSUES AND WE DEPEND ON THE MEDIA TO KEEP US INFORMED. WELL THAT'S GONE DOWN THE DRAIN BECUASE THE MEDIA IS SO BIASED THE NEWS IS SLANTED TOO BAD FOR US TO BELIEVE. ISAY "KEPP IT UP" AND WE WILL TRY TO STAY ABREAST OF THE TRUTHS. Mrs. Wellborn would do well to have started locally with Henry Brown, who is not a keeper and never was. I admire anybody with a grassroots effort but when you see the government as the enemy and wash your hands of it, you effectively turn it over to people who might not support your agenda. Government can be an effective force to work on the big problems in society. Why not test your ideas, Mrs. Wellborn? Run for Congress yourself and see how well your ideas play in the public arena. You might be surprised. Or are you only interested in attacking like the other Republicans who offer no plan?

I'm sorry but the College of Charleston Professors are way toooo liberal to give an unbiased point of view on politics. My daughter graduated from there and that's a mistake I wish we could have a "redo" on.. The Professors there do NOT give a well rounded education to the students. Unfortunately we don't find that out until it's too late. So the opinion of this Professor Ford of the College of Charleston does not carry a lot of weight with me.

We need to be astute and independent enough to critically analyze for ourselves and reach our own conclusions. It's not good to rely on others always to lead us. Don't even rely on the statistics other people supply. Search them out yourself. It's also helpful to look for the real agenda of groups that may appear innocuous in name, whether it's Freedom Works or Move On.org . Is this a front group for the GOP or is it a true grassroots organization? Is it another way to donate money to support GOP candidates or is it really a nonpartisan group? Find out who the backers are.Don't join any group until you have the full picture. Don't be manipulated.

Actually you don't have to be a republican. You just have to support paying for your own s#!t, being responsible for yourself, understand that capitalism, not socialism, is what made us the "greatest country in the world", and understanding what spending money you don't have can do to a country's present and future economic status. That's all. It is pretty much common sense. There is a difference b/w a Republican and a Conservative. I can't say the same for Democrat and Liberal.

Your fantasy lover, the impostor in chief has done more damage to this country in seven short months then all the previous presidents in history and you are too stupid or mesmerized to see it.
Wake up, fool.

My hats off to Catherine Welborn. She has a good idea and I'm in 100% agreement with her basic goals.

Our government is corrupt from the top down and it's time to clean house, starting at the top. We don't need a Marxist for a president nor do we need a bunch of suck up lifetime politicians fawning over his every insane action to the detriment of our republic.

Term limits for all would be a good start along with outlawing earmarks and campaigning for one office while being paid to perform in another.

Federal funds going to colleges and universities has long created a lapdog mentality in these schools as they have become nothing more than servants to the social engineering efforts of a left leaning government drunk on power.

There is little room for free thought or expression as young people are molded into willing slaves of an ideology that will eventually destroy this country.

Of course this effort by Mrs. Welborn may be nipped at the bud if the administration seizes control of the internet, which they are planning to do in the interest of "national security"!

Opposition to the government must be stifled!

I wonder just how much abuse people in these United States will accept before it's determined that something drastic needs to be done?

We cannot continue on the present path and expect our country to survive as a beacon of freedom for the rest of the world.

Yes, change all right. Change is NOT always good though. O and his goons want to institute a policy where conservative radio stations would have to pay a "tax" the equivalent of their entire revenue for the year!! Hello. You have to give the government all your revenue and you go out of business.

I don't care what side of the aisle you are on, we must have free speech from both sides.

"There will be change and you better statr getting used to it" is unfortunately the attitude of O and Holder and the rest of his buddies. Guess you saw and heard the black panthers that blocked the door way last fall during election day? THey refused to let whites in to vote. They said something like, "You are going to be ruled by a black man now cracker." Holder of the Justice Dept. threw it out. It was a true case of voter intimidation and it was all caught on tape.

As for the stim-u-less, O is deliberately bankrupting our country. He is trying to collapse the economy and is consolidating his power. He has illegally put the census under White House control with ACORN in charge of it!! He has moved interrogation authority under the White House authority!! Think of that!

O stated last year that he wanted a domestic security force as strong as the military!! Yikes! Gestapo anyone?? It was on Youtube, but they have been taking down videos of O right and left. Not sure if they still have the one posted where he says he doesn't speak Austrian! Yes, he really said that.

O spent his whole life marinating is Marxism, socialism, communism thought. That is what he was taught was "good". America bad. That is what he marinated in. How anyone could vote for a man that spent 20 years listening to a pastor spewing hatred against this country and against whites and jews is beyond belief. O's church gave Louis Farrakhan and award for heavens sakes!! Farrakhan spews anti-semitic rants. Sickening.

As for the tea party protests? People from both sides of the aisle were there and everyone was quite civil.

People from both sides of the aisle are protesting this "deny ppl medical treatment" too.

If O truly was worried about the uninsured (many make over $50,000 a year and many are illegals)he would have allocated some of the money from the stim-u-less bill. That bill was written by unelected ppl, by the way. Onde guy was a founding member of the Weather Underground. You know, that group that was blowing innocent ppl up in the 70's?

Where have you been? The financial sector was about to collapse and would bring the country to it's knees. Economic chaos would have followed. The ensuing depression would bring hardships we never experienced before. This was avoided by tarp and the stimulus pacakage. Yes it cost a great deal of money and yes we will have to pay it back. But our economy is recovering. President Obama had the fortitude to do what needed to be done. He should be thanked for it. None of this would have been neccessary if the republicans in power looked out for the citizens of this country and not the profits of their friends. RASMUSSEN POLL: Obama Approval New Low at 46%

57% Would Like to Replace Entire Congress

If they could vote to keep or replace the entire Congress, just 25% of voters nationwide would keep the current batch of legislators.

A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that 57% would vote to replace the entire Congress and start all over again. Eighteen percent (18%) are not sure how they would vote.

Overall, these numbers are little changed since last October. When Congress was passing the unpopular $700-billion bailout plan in the heat of a presidential campaign and a seeming financial industry meltdown, 59% wanted to throw them all out. At that time, just 17% wanted to keep them.

Should that black rule follow the same pattern as other black ruled nations like Sudan, Nigeria or Liberia where disease and mayhem are the natural order of the day?

Tell us oh learned descendant of ancient winged beings of superior intellect, do you really want "black rule"?

charlestowne2,evidently you have not lived long enough to remember, or have never been taught that the democrats controlled the purse strings of this country for 40 years plus, where they laid the groundwork for a myriad of budget busting entitlement programs before the republicans got control of congress.

That aside, your minimal understanding of basic fiscal responsibility explains why you have bought into "the sky is falling" theme broadcast by the administration as they incurred massive new debt to curtail a crises that will now surely occur because of their obscene actions.

As far as reading the Obamas' college papers, if we read/heard some of the things many of our politicians wrote/said/felt pre-politics we would all get some insight on how they feel about America and fellow Americans (Black, White, Brown, et al) as a whole.

Do not presume to know my party affiliation or my history! You have no idea what I did or did not do regarding government spending over the last 12 years.

Know this, I am against any government spending except for what the Constitution allows! I am not for giving MY hard earned money to anyone unless I choose to give it; despite how sympathetic and benevolent all the claims that are made when you are stealing it. So, you can just keep your brilliant Stimulus Pkg and insane "spend us out of recession" philosophy. You may thank me for helping to pay for your car, your health care and any and all other handouts the government has illegally given to you without MY consent!

I don't agree with electing officials because of the many benefits and gifts they promise for my vote! The only promise I want is for the elected to support and defend the Constitution as they pledged when taking the oath of office! TYVM

YouKnow, O said in his book "Dreams from my Father" that he was drawn to Marxism. What is your opinion of his listening to a pastor spewing hatred against whites, Jews, and America? O gave his church $40,000 in total during 2005 and 2006. Ayers kicked off his fundraising for his run for the Illinois Senate.

How anyone could vote for a man that listened to that bilge for 20 years is beyond comprehension.

Yes, Bush spent too much (when the dems were in the minority under Bush, they wanted to spend more than what Bush proposed!). Those of us that voted for Bush were very angry about it. The Republicans blew it. We actually speak out against it though. You O supporters refuse to speak out against his mistakes.

The stim-u-less package is nothing but money going to dems' interest groups. Did you know 8 billion dollars is going to ACORN?? You know who they are don't you? Did all that fradulent voter registration last fall?

Hundreds of millions went to condom distribution. Well, I guess that is a stimulus package...ooh,la, la! ;-)

I actually saw the video of the guy blocking the doorway to the voting station. Youtube it. Although, they have probably taken it down.

Have you heard about the Cybersecurity bill of 2009? O would have the authority to shut down the internet whenever he felt like it.

I saw many videos of O's preacher spewing bilge against whites, Jews, and America. As a white woman I don't understand how you could vote for a man that listened to hatred for 20 years against your race. Sickening.

Anyway, I know many O supporters will never believe anything about him. It is very scary indeed.

It is time for a Constitutional Convention to examine and recommend a workable system for management and administration of the United States. Number and size of the States need to be researched. The need for local, county and state government needs study. Division of power between the States and the Federal Government needs serious examination. Finally the organization and management of the Federal Government is of major concern. A major concern should be tax revenue and budget for the States and Federal government.

TDarby, a Constitutional Convention would be diastrous. With the ppl in power now, they could rewrite the entire Constitutional and take away all our freedoms.

I heard O give a radio interview in 2001 in which he said he did not believe in the constraints our Founding Fathers placed on the Constitution. Those constraints are on the federal gov't. In other words, he wants the federal gov't to have unfettered power!! He does not believe in the Constitution!!

He has shown that time and time again. He fired the CEO of GM!! The president fired someone in the private sector!! That is fascism pure and simple. Now he and the dems want to tell companies what they can pay their employees.

By the way, I have been getting spam emails from the White House. Started about 2 months ago. After I got my first two emails, I read that O and his goons had broken federal law getting their hands on our email addresses.

The Colonist Knew What To Do With George III

While the freedoms granted by the Constitution are timeless, The management and government of the United States are not. When the Constitution was ratified there were thirteen States, the population was just slightly more than one million citizens, and the budget was well less than two million dollars. Today, the congress is composed of more than five hundred individuals, the budget is so large the GAO cannot keep up with the spending, and the population is more than three hundred million citizens in fifty States. The Congressmen are more interested in reelection than governing the country. Lobbyist provide large sums of money for favors that are against the best interest of the citizens. The election of a President is more a popularity contest than a search for a well qualified person. The Candidates are chosen by a two party system. About sixty percent of the population are active party members. The other forty percent of the population generally vote against a candidate rather than voting for a candidate. The citizens are calling for change in the government.

It is time for a Constitutional Convention to examine and recommend a workable system for management and administration of the United States. Number and size of the States need to be researched. The need for local, county and state government needs study. Division of power between the States and the Federal Government needs serious examination. Fact - I joined the military and they said we will provide you healhcare while on active duty and when you retire. It was part of a contract between me and the government. It wasnt just handed to me for nothing.

Fact - I did my part and now receive my retirement check.

Fact - my healthcare is provided by Humana which is Tricare Prime HMO provider.

Fact - I pay a annual premium for the "free healthcare" the government promised me. It comes out of my check.

Fact - I pay co-pays, I pay for my meds, I go to a PRIVATE primary care Dr.

Fact - If I were to try and use the VA for everyday type illnesses, it would take 3-4 months to be seen.
- NOT THE VA's fault, they are over burdened with red tape and 100s of rules governing PRIORITY patients. VA folks do a great job, but they can not take care of all the vets, therefore we PAY a premium to be seen by private Dr.s

Socialized medicine? Sure, go for it, join the military serve your country and EARN it. But Socialized healthcare - Its not as great as you think.

Fact - if I go to the ER with a headache, bad cold, or the flu, and Tricare deems it a NO-ER event - I PAY FOR THE COST of the visit.

Fact - if I were an unisured illegal or legal resident and went to the ER I would pay zip, nada, zero.

But I already know how most of you leftists think about us evil military members, we saw that with the radical 60s scum during Vietnam.

So, instead of griping about getting 'free' socialized med healthcare, thank a vet for your ability to enjoy your freedoms, including the freedom to disdain those of us that have sacrificed for our country and get the benifits we were promised. I was fortunate, others have given the ultimate sacrifice.

It really is amazing, you phony leftist cray and moan about the troops dying in the war on terror yet resent the fact that we get -OMG- 'free' healthcare & a retirement check.

Saw Inez Tennebaum being interviewed by John Stossel on ABC and she defended blocking school choice because "it had never been tried before". Huh?? Well, let's give it a try. Minority are hurt the most by blocking school choice!! You should be able to go to whatever public school you want no matter where you live. You shouldn't have to live in a swanky neighborhood.

By the way, Bush instituted a program where inner city kids could apply for a voucher and go to a private school in the DC area and get out of the failing public school system. There are about 1700 kids in the program. Most are black and were doing well in this program.

Guess what?? The stimulus bill will stop this program. Why?? Because that is what the teachers union wanted. And hey, the teachers union is a big contributor to the dem party. These kids will be thrown back into the public schools next year. So please, spare me that Republicans don't care about education and our kids.

After working to eliminate the deficit left by a republican president. Now history is repeating only this repupublican president not only left a giant deficit, but the entire economy in shambles. Now you are blaming the democrat president cleaning up another republican mess. Banks stopped leanding, businesses could not get loans to met their payrolls, and were threatened with going out of business. The drop in the stock market and housing industry cost many their homes and life savings. And it was getting worse by the day. In fact, the sky was falling. The only way to save the economy was to inject money into it. Basic economics. The only place to get that money was from the federal government. I didn't hear another solution proposed accept the one that got us here. Another tax break for the rich.

And for the record I am not on the government dole. I don't get a cent of my support from any government agency. No welfare, food stamps, social security, military pension or medicare. Neither I or my children received a government loan or grant for college educations. Did you ever read the preamble to the constitution where it says "Promote the general welfare"? By the way, if Bush's spending was bad for the economy please tell me how O doing spending on steroids will help the economy?? The government spending us into oblivion will not help the economy. If O had slashed corporate tax rates that would have helped. How? It would make the business climate more hospital for well, businesses. Everytime taxes are slashed, tax revenues increase. Why? Because companies can afford to hire more ppl thereby more ppl paying taxes! I worked for a small business in the late 80's and early 90's that would not have been in business if not for Reagan's tax cuts. Revenues increased under his tax cuts.

What is your opinion of the inner city kids that will be booted back into the dismal public school system in DC?

Did you know that 550 tons of yellowcake was found in Iraq? It was quietly sold to Canada in the summer of 2008 for peaceful purposes. MSM won't report on that though. Both sides of the aisle said there was WMD's. Congress authorized the war. That is how it works (with the Constitution). The president has to put it before a vote to Congress before we can go to war. Maybe you didn't know that.

To those of you whining about "tax cuts for the rich".....tell me something, have you ever been given a job by a poor person?? Of have you always gotten a job from someone who has more money than you? Lose the jealousy of others success. It is really unbecoming.

You must be getting a check to post on this thread....no one who wasn't getting paid would type your tripe! Let me see:

Bush spent money on WAR! I know, I know, that was always the tried and true way to jump start an economy of old, but the times have changed and industry is now global. So that premise does not work anymore. Obama spent money on things that actually get the industry wheels turning.....you will note that all the "shovel ready" are actually getting people back to work and earning a paycheck. The "clunkers" actually got the line producing again.

So yellowcake has peaceful uses......hhhhmmmmm then maybe it wasn't for WMD's.........You are a freak if you think I believe one thing you type about WMD in Iraq....do you also thing they had something to do with 9-11? Come one answer that one. It will determine whether or not you are just a little nuts or all the way over the edge into crazy land. Congress authorized the war on lies told to the American public by Bush/Cheney/ Wolfawitz.......Powell proved he had balls and a soul by leaving the Bush administration.

Sorry, you right leaners do not have the golden boy touch on the economy anymore.....look what your stinking "free market" did with you guys at the helm....it imploded! Unregulated power hungry greed mongers at just that.....power hungry....greedy....unregulated. I wouldn't allow one of your ilk touch my money at this point.

I love it when you all tell me who I am.....AND GET IT WRONG! I love it when you tell me what I think....AND GET IT WORNG.

I will tell you what I feel and the green-eyed monster has nothing to do with it.....I am not jealous of the rich....crap man I am one of those......what I am sick of is the rich staying rich on the backs of the poor. I am sick of the haves and the have nots, I am sick of seeing the middle class broken, I am sick of people like you that could actually use universal healthcare sticking your head in the sand because of partisan bickering......I am sick of you all being so VERY VERY VERY ignorant and knowing it and not doing anything about it.

Msnbc reported the yellow cake in Iraq story July 5, 2008. Yellow cake is not a weapon of mass destruction. By the way, congress never declared war on Iraq. Bush and Chaney fed them enough false information to get "authorization for use of military force" They kept the war going by calling people unpatriotic to not vote to fund the war. Once soldiers were in harms way, he got all the money he needed. The soldiers were supported not the war.

One of the biggest expenses for business is health care. If health care was universally funded like in the rest of the industialized world, we would be better able to compete. Asian and European business can sell for less partly because of their lower health care costs. And they still have higher life expectancy then in the US. When health insurance premiums go up 10% next year, pay raises will be less if at all, jobs with health benefits will be harder to find and more jobs will probably move over seas to cut costs. Businessess would save more money from health care reform then lowering taxes

charlestowne2, one of the reasons health insurance is so expensive is gov't has blocked the sale of insurance across state lines.

What is it ppl don't get about "universal health care"? You get DENIED medical treatment under "universal health care". Also, if it is so wonderful, why does Congress exempt themselves from the very bill they are trying to pass?? Not only are there cut off ages as you get older there are cut off ages for being too young. Saw an English woman the other day who tried to get a pap smear at 20 and was told she had to wait until she was 21. When she tried at 21 she was told the age had gone to 23. When she was 23 she was told the age had gone to 25!! She had cervical cancer at 23!! Not sure how she was able to get treated.

I can repost some of the things in the bill (I posted the other day). Did you know they will have direct access to our bank accounts? Our medical records will be kept electronically in DC??

Uranium yellowcake is used to power nuclear power plants and to ENRICH URANIUM FOR NUCLEAR WEAPONS. Anyone who believe Saddam planned on using it for peaceful purposes...well, I have a bridge to sell you.

One of his generals said he personally escorted two (or three) planeloads of WMD's to Syria before the war. He said Saddam had an agreement with Syria that if invasion appeared imminent (we built up forces for many months before going in) he would have it wisked out and sent to Syria.

By the way, Saddam declared war the second he fired on our planes over the Kurdish area. He signed an agreement after the first war. Part of that agreement was our planes would fly over that region to insure he was not attacking the Kurds.

He broke the peace agreement the second he kicked the UN inspectors out when Clinton was president as well.

This is just another case of the Ultimate Con that has been played on American people.
Which can be summed up by this Question:
Health care, is it a Right or Privilege?
To which question that lunatic Demint said, that "It is a privilege..."
This question is a (right-wing) loaded question, or it is an incomplete question.
Because the question is NOT just that:
"Health care, is it a Right or Privilege?"

But 1st the question is:
"Does the Government have a Right or a Privilege to our incomes in form of Taxes?"
The answer is that the Government has a Right to our Income in form of Taxes since
we do not pay Taxes on a voluntary basis but we pay it under the Law and under
the threat of going to Jail if we do not pay our Taxes.

So if the Government has the "Right to our money in form of Taxes" as a result of
which we pay about 40% of our income in various forms of Taxes, from income Taxes,
to property Taxes, to sales Taxes, etc.

THEN we indeed have the RIGHT to get value for our Taxes and the least of these
values is to get the best health care possible for the Taxes that we are paying the Government.
So the best Universal Health Care is indeed a Right of the Citizens, as it has having the best
Military, Police, Fire Department, etc. for the Governments Right to Tax us.
This is something that EVERY European Nation, Canada, Australia, in FACT all Developed
nations have realized and have been practicing but US!

So how is it that ONLY in US the Government has been able to get away with Taxing its Citizens
while not providing us with health care for these Taxes,? The answer is the one of the Ultimate Con
Jobs in the History of man kind has been played on American people by the Republicans,
and Democrats too, for the benefit of the Rich, Big Pharma, Big Corporations who control our
Media and that Ultimate Con Job has been:
"Government cannot do anything...."
"Government is the problem not the solution..."
etc.
Which translated means:
1- You the People cannot do anything since the Government is the representative of the People to decide what
happens to our Taxes
2- Pay Taxes and ask and get nothing for your Taxes such as Universal Health Care.

The result of which Con Job is that our Taxes go to the benefit of the Rich, Big Pharma, Big Corporations, etc. rather
than going to our benefit.

So if this lady and "Tea party.." people want to have the US live within its budget THEN they would be for cutting the US Military budget which is beyond Gargantuan and one of the KEY reasons behind US economy going bankrupt compared to European economies.

"The Clinton administration drastically cut the military budget"

WHEN US has the most Gargantuan US Military budget on Earth! To see how Gargantuan US Military budget is just consider these facts:
1- US Military budget is larger than Military budget of all other countries on earth combined while today US economy is NOT even 15% of World economy - just do this simple math and you can see that this is unsustainable and this math is bankrupting the American people (middle class). That is for US Military budget to be inline with the size of the US economy compared to the World economy then US Military budget must be 15% of World Military budget since US economy is 15% of World economy which means US Military budget needs to be at $90Bill. Now to see how Gargantuan US Military budget today is at $600Bill consider the FACT that at if US Military budget is cut to $90Bill it will still be the Worlds largest Military budget BY FAR, by factor of 300% in fact since the next largest Military budget is that of the Chinese at about $30Bill.

2- US has 300,000+ troops in Europe and bases in almost ALL European countries, pumping something like 50Bill Euros per year, AT LEAST, of American Tax payers money into European economies as a result of these troops and bases, and here you have Europe which is much richer than US as evident by Euro being so much more valuable than US Dollar as evident by Europeans all having Universal health care, etc. AND here is THE KILLER fact: Europe has No enemy that it cannot easily defend from and crush on its own.

What needs to be regulated and reduced is the spending on government contracts. Research is important, but we spend billions each year to have someone tell us what we already knew "in their words". We need to increases our education resources, regulate lottery resources and track spending. Lottery revenue for 1 month can pay the entire budget for Charleston County Schools not considering allocated funds already set aside for education, but we lay off teachers while lottery officials go fishing and our kids are failing. Clemson doesn't fund education research for Title I but they have an agriculture research facility in every county in South Carolina. The Constitution reserves the power to declare war to the Congress. However, Congress has not declared war since World War II. They did not declare war for Korea, Viet Nam, Cambodia, Grenada, Nicaragua, Iraq, Afghanistan, Lebanon, Somalia, Sudan, Kosovo, or any other military conflict since 1941 despite funding the missions. Congress prefers to let the conflict take place, see the results, then claim in hindsight that they were either for or against it depending on the outcome. The closest they come is a resolution like the one for Iraq (Authorization For Use of Military Force Against Iraq (P.L. 107-243)). Prominent members of both parties stood and made speeches supporting the effort because of the "WMD" that Hussein "definitely" had prior to voting for the resolution. The idea of the War Powers Resolution of 1973 was to make the President come to Congress to get permission to use military force against another country for more than 90 days (60 days plus 30 for withdrawal). The only reason Congress wanted or needed the War Powers Resolution was because they had a long history of never making a decision.

Let me get this straight....

Welborn bombs in a Berkeley County race, so they get mad, pack their marbles and look for a new playground - West Ashley. I remember... he was the one who refused to divulge his age for the paper's profile piece, saying it was too personal... Vanity, thy name is Paul!

And Mrs. Welborn...

So now she has jumped on the "throw 'em all out" band wagon. Except her site is as contradictory as she and the Mr. are. It says all members should be replaced but much further down, she mentions a "keeper" list. Schizo!!

charleston_realist, how brain dead or brain washed are you Republicans to state this non-sense:
" It cost money to be the worlds police..."

If we were the Worlds Police man then the World will be paying us for Policing the World, which means they would be paying us at least for basing our bases in their countries, BUT it is the exact opposite way around. That is we are paying 100s of Billions of Dollars to station our bases all over the World. The world is not paying us 1 Cent in Taxes to Police the World.

What police man do you know that pays Taxes to those who it is protecting!

So we are policing the world only in the mind of lunatic Republicans and the war-mongers who control 99% of US Media, which is why 99% of US Media is so right-wing.

I mean just think about it: US has 300,000+ troops in Europe and bases in almost ALL European countries, pumping something like 50Bill Euros per year, AT LEAST, of American Tax payers money into European economies as a result of these troops and bases, and here you have Europe which is much richer than US as evident by Euro being so much more valuable than US Dollar as evident by Europeans all having Universal health care, etc. AND here is THE KILLER fact: Europe has No enemy that it cannot easily defend from and crush on its own, for if Europe actually needed our troops to defend it from a real enemy THEN European countries will be paying us for having our troops there AND NOT THE OTHER WAY AROUND.

For more on 99% of US Media being right-wing which is why it is 2009 and we still do not have Universal health care or we are still in Iraq or have such a Gargantuan Military that we cannot afford, check out:
