North Charleston hosts Bishop England
North Charleston hosts Bishop England in high school season opener in North Charleston.
With North Charleston trying to hang on to a slim lead late in the game against Bishop England, everyone at Attaway-Heinsohn Field knew Cougars' quarterback Denzel Myers was going to carry the football.
It was also common know-ledge that there was nothing anyone could do to stop him.
Myers rushed for three touchdowns and 182 yards -- 103 in the fourth quarter -- and the Cougars beat the Bishops, 26-20, Friday night.
"Until we get some of our backs healthy, he's going to have to carry the load both passing and rushing," North Charleston coach Jimmy Brown said of Myers. "He has been doing that for us."
Bishop England trailed 12-7 at the half, but a pair of Brenden Costa field goals had the Bishops (0-2) leading 13-12 heading into the fourth quarter.
Then Myers took over, scoring on a 17-yard run and a 9-yard run in the fourth quarter to all but put the game away.
The Bishops mounted one final challenge after sophomore Andrew Bunch returned a kickoff 76 yards and later scored on a 3-yard run with approximately three minutes to play.
But the Cougars (2-0) recovered the onside kick and ran out the clock behind the running of Myers.
Bunch finished with 137 yards on 19 carries for the Bishops.
"We wanted to eliminate big plays, and we gave up big plays," said Bishop England coach John Cantey.
"Myers was running, slinging the ball to Corey Washington, and we just couldn't stop him. They started pounding us a little bit later, but Jimmy Brown is such a good coach and they were doing stuff to us that we just couldn't counter."
Bishop England took an early 7-0 lead after a 75-yard touchdown run by Bunch in the first quarter.
A 47-yard pass from Myers to Corey Washington set up Myers' 1-yard touchdown run in the second quarter, but the Cougars' run attempt on the conversion failed and the Bishops still led 7-6.
The Cougars took a 12-7 lead later in the quarter when Myers completed a 32-yard touchdown pass to Washington.
BE--Andrew Bunch 75 run (Brenden Costa kick)
NC--Denzel Myers 1 run (run failed)
NC--Corey Washington 32 pass from Myers (pass failed)
BE--Costa 22 FG
BE--Costa 29 FG

He's stoppable but not by what Bishop England calls defense. It looked like they were lost, confused and then they just ran out of gas.

This Kid is an amazing talent. The question is not why couldn't Bishop England stop this kid, but how does this guy seem to find the hole when he knows that the defense knows exactly what he's going to do. All eyes were on him and he still managed to keep racking them up. More to Come..... YA
