Lawanda Glears

Age: 48.

Family: Husband, Kevin; daughter, Lauren; son, Kevin Jr.

Experience: Guidance counselor, guidance director, Burke High; guidance counselor in North Chicago and Jacksonville, Fla., school districts; principal, Brentwood Middle.

Education: B.A., political science, and M.Ed., counseling, South Carolina State University; M.Ed., educational leadership, University of North Florida.

Why I wanted to go into education: I love working with children. I know a good education is one of the keys to unlocking many doors.

Something I've always wanted to learn: How to play golf.

Something important life has taught me: Live each day as though it is your last because tomorrow is not promised to you.

Something most people do not know about me: I'm a perfectionist.

Something my parents always told me: Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.

Fond childhood memory: Spending time with my grandmother on her porch during the summer months in Huger.

A specific goal I hope to accomplish during this first year: Improve the reading skills of students attending Sixth Grade Academy so that they can meet the challenges of middle and high school.
