Yvonne Commodore

Age: 46.

Family: Married since 1982; two children, ages 26 and 23; two grandchildren.

Experience: Principal, assistant principal, program developer, entrepreneur, adjunct professor, teacher and mental health counselor; more than 23 years of ministry experience.

Education: Doctorate in pastoral community counseling, 2004, Argosy University of Sarasota, Fla; education specialist degree, 2002, University of Sarasota; master of social work, 1996, University of South Carolina; bachelor of arts, social work, 1995, Benedict College; Ronald McNair Graduate Scholars Program, 1994, USC.

Why I wanted to get into education: I was born in poverty as a Jamaican native. I came to the United States at age 17 and continued my quest to achieve the highest degree in education. I wanted to get into education because there are hundreds of students with stories like mine. I wanted to instill hope and help teachers understand the importance of high expectations for all students regardless of race, religion, national origin or socio-economic status etc.

Something I've always wanted to learn: To be fluent in Spanish. To play tennis and golf.

Something important life has taught me: Be your best self even when no one is looking.

Something most people don't know about me: That I am a grandmother.

Something my parents always told me: Work hard and good will come to me. Also, good manners will bring me a long way.

Fond childhood memory: Visiting the beautiful beaches of Jamaica and receiving my first and only doll at age 5.

A specific goal I hope to accomplish during this first year: Increase student outcomes by an unquestionable margin in all subject areas as evident by testing results.
