7 hurt in collision of 2 vans
By Schuyler Kropf
A head-on collision Thursday night in West Ashley injured seven people, four of them young children, authorities said.
The wreck between two vans at the intersection of Savannah Highway and Braxton Avenue occurred about 9:30 p.m.
One van had a family of two adults and four young children, officials said. All family members were thought to be in serious condition and were taken to a hospital, though the injuries did not appear to be life-threatening.
The highway was still closed at 10:30 p.m. as emergency workers tried to extricate the driver of the second van, also thought to be in serious condition.
About 20 rescue and police vehicles from Charleston city and county were at the scene.
Telly Hollins, who was on his way home, helped to get the door of the first van open and rescued one child.
"Everybody's OK," he said.
Hollins said many people stopped after the collision, eager to help the family.
Robert Bell, a pediatric nurse on his way home and one of first people on scene, said he saw smoke and smelled gas and thought there was about to be a fire. "I was about to start ripping babies out of car seats," he said.
