Brown's hush-hush forum
By Brian Hicks
You can never find a Republican Workhorse when you need one.
For weeks now, a lot of folks have been after Congressman Henry Brown to schedule a town hall-type meeting to discuss the various health care reform proposals floating around Washington.
The Lowcountry needs guidance, answers and a clean, well-lighted place to yell out questions and condemn folks of the opposing political viewpoint.
It's like a constitutional right or something.
Brown's staff has been apologetically promising something would be coming soon. Well, late Monday afternoon, something came.
Seems the congressman had a health care roundtable at Trident Medical Center on Monday with "several First District physicians and other health officials."
"Simply maintaining the status quo of health care is not sustainable over the long haul," Brown told those doctors, according to his press release. "However, I feel that there are many problems with the reforms currently proposed in the House version of the health bill ... and many have been motivated to come out strongly against the bill at recent town halls."
Of course, there's no way to know everything he said.
The media were not told in advance; the public was not invited.
No photos, please
The statement from Brown's office noted that he had "joined" Sen. Jim DeMint at the Daniel Island Club on Monday morning to "talk with many of his constituents from the Charleston area about health care reform and to hear opinions from both sides of the issue."
Actually, Brown was sitting in the crowd and DeMint stopped briefly to shake his hand. The exchange went like this:
DeMint: Hope you don't mind me coming into your territory.
Brown: This isn't my territory. It's Clyburn's.
Huh. So Brown attended a town hall-like meeting in another congressional district, sat in the audience and did not speak publicly.
But he listened and chatted with folks in the crowd.
So we've got that going for us.
Heckuva job, Brownie
Brown's office said Tuesday that he met with doctors at Trident to get their views in preparation for his Grand Strand appearance later this week. Plans for a Lowcountry meeting, his office said, "are still being finalized."
More information
Congressman Brown's Aug. 17, 2009 press release about health care reform, from Rep. Brown's web site
How hard is this? You don't have to do much -- just take an hour and listen. Maybe recite a few of the talking points going around. Such as:
Do you want your health care controlled by the same folks who brought you the Hurricane Katrina cleanup?
A fine line many Republicans have used, even if it does ignore the fact that they were in charge of every branch of government during that fiasco.
Fact is, the Lowcountry deserves a forum for people to express their fears, offer their ideas, gripe about the president. Folks just need to feel like their voice has been heard. So humor them -- and don't forget the Katrina line.
It worked for DeMint.

Awww...is the media upset b/c they weren't personally invited or courted? Too freakin' bad.
I used to think the media told the truth. I actually considered a career in journalism and declared it as my first major in college in the sixties. I am so glad I switched my major.
I wouldn't want to be identified with the fifth estate now. All they do is distort the truth to get THE STORY. Most of the time it is BY ANY MEANS POSSIBLE resulting in misinformation and outright lies.
They have a sense of entitlement that is outrageous. I put much of the ill will in our nation on their shoulders. We certainly will never have another Cronkite in this crowd of bozos.

Brown was re-elected, so why should he care about what the person off the street has to say. He knows that he has job security, benefits, health insurance, and a good retirement plan, so why should he be bothered by what the people he supposedly represents think!

Mr Hicks
Please send me your invitation to Mr Clyburn's townhall meeting, being a constituent in his district I would be interested in whene and where the meeting is. He has publically stated that only the Bull Conners of the world attend these things. He is afraid someone will turn the fire house on his staff and believes that heath care is a "civil right". Mr. Clyburn has proven that he is for the party of Pelosi and could care less about the folks in South Carolina. i would like to know how much in bribes he is going to pay from his campaign fund to fellow democrats for betraying their constituents. He paid 28K to get them to vote for the cap and trade bill which he never read. Mr Hicks I know it is hard for you to put your personal politics aside when writing, I also know that this is why the P&C have employed you to write your drivel.

Brian Hicks is a COLUMNIST here, which means he expresses an opinion so you shouldn't expect an attempt to be unbiased. And I hold the same opinion.Henry Brown's supposed meeting with doctors was a farce; if you notice, most of his appearances are tightly controlled and scripted by a protective staff. Why does he need handlers now? Henry Brown is no workhorse; he went to Washington to retire and is already out to pasture. It should surprise no one that he is not in the health care dialogue. He has never engaged himself in the issues that are important to our district so why should we expect him to be interested in the most important issue in our nation today? He's holding a place and marking time, so don't expect him to preside over anything. And since we had the foresight to re-elect him not once but several times just because of a party label, we're getting exactly what we paid for. Or at least what Washington lobbyists paid for.

Clyburn held a public forum on healthcare back in July in Charleston. It was announced in the Newspaper twice, widely publicized online and attended by over 200 people. He held one yesterday evening in Columbia, on short notice, but announced in the paper and open to the public. Clyburn's forum was held on a Saturday afternoon at the Longshoreman's hall, at a location that was accessable by Public Transit. There was ample parking. Some Republicans were present. Everyone who wanted to had the opportunity to ask questions.
I'm organizing some local healthcare events. There is a huge difference between planning a meeting to discuss public policy and setting up an event where we have to deal with screaming mobs, many of which are apparently armed and determined to bring loaded weapons into the event. You have to contract for police protection ($22 per hour, four hour minimum per officer), develop and deploy a full security plan and somehow try to keep guns out of the room. Unfortunately very few of our large, public meeting places are set up for a full security screen with Metal detectors. We need to be sure some of them are. However such equipment requires trained operators who are Law enforcement officers, and that is a significant cost.
After the Republicans began sending mobs to "blow up" Town Hall meetings with the help of Freedom Works, it took several weeks to retool the planning for all these events. Many were canceled in the planning stage. Now some are being announced, after a huge amount of additional work, planning and expense.
None of this extra effort improves the quality of the discussion, it's just massive additional overhead. Much of this falls on political organizations who rely on volunteers and have small budgets.
I'm paying for the police protection at an event this week out of my own pocket. That is the premium the rednecks have imposed on free speech. They bring guns to silence us all and clear the public realm of meaningful debate and discussion.
I say I value free speech, now it has a price on it, the cost of off duty, armed law enforcement officers. I've held hundreds of forums and debates over the last 31 years and until now, this hasn't been necessary.
Henry Brown should hold a public forum to listen to the people he represents. Not at a country club on Monday morning on the day before school starts, but at a time and location where everyone can come, accessible by public transportation, with no admission charge. It should, if possible, be held in a place with full security capability, including metal detectors so everyone will feel safe speaking their mind. A security detail will be needed for the parking lot as well, with designated demonstration areas for people on both sides of the issue, appropriately separated.
Local government needs to select a public meeting place of adequate size to be equipped for such meetings that all our representatives can use.

While I do think that it would be good for Congressman Brown to have a town hall meeting, not so that we may oppose him, but to offer our support as Conservatives in South Carolina, I must remind everyone that this is not the most important aspect of this health care debate. We must remember that we know that Brown is openly opposing the Democrats health care bill and any other forms of Government Controlled or Socialized health care.
While I know that it is important to keep pressure on our politicians to speak out as often as they can, I believe that we could all use this momentum and our united voice to work more on those members of Congress who still are in support of the Democrat’s bill.
In short, I believe that it is more important to try and influence the other members of Congress who are supporting this horrible bill, rather than turning on our own and fighting about a meeting. At least we don’t have to live in Clyburn’s district where he supports the bill and we still would not be heard.

Screaming mobs? With guns? I should think that would be the time to call the police, not arrange for private security. Can anyone think of when and where this has been a problem? This sounds like an excuse to not hold public meetings, especially when congressmen are asked questions they prefer not to answer.
My question to both Clyburn and Brown is name your alternatives to spending enormous sums on "rescuing the economy," "bailing out banks," and "running GM." Then ask if you read the health care bill passed by the House and what are your thoughts on these matters?

There will be some form of health care legislation passed. Exactly what it contains has not yet been determined. Brown has virtually zero influence on the outcome. So how he can he explain it? He can listen to all the attendees of a town hall raise cain but what does that accomplish? Clyburn is in a power position. This ain't like the good old days when we had a powerful Congressman like Mendel Rivers. At present Clyburn and Spratt are key players. The rest are non entities. On the Senate side Graham at least has political capital to spend. DeMint has none.

brownpw says "Where does that say that the Federal government has any business in the daily affairs of men?" So I assume you are then libertarian and FOR gay marriage, legalization of drugs and preserving abortion rights, right??? Face it, most of you people screaming about the government getting involved with people's lives have no idea what this health care bill is about (neither does DeMint apparently) or even know what a public OPTION entails. You think people like DeMint and Brown care about the government getting involved in your life when they support them getting involved in your private lives in ways that have no effect on your or anyone else's well-being. Hypocrisy at its best.
Look everyone respects the constitution, but it's not a perfect, infallible document handed down from God to the founders. It's a document written by men, well-to-do men before our country was anywhere near what it is today. Before women or black people were even considered citizens and in a world where only men with "property" had a say. In other words, no it was not perfect and definitely not all-inclusive of ALL the issues that a new nation would face. How could they know anyways, even they weren't that prescient. It was written in the 18th century for pete's sake! The world has changed about 10 times over since then. Even the founders themselves that wrote the constitution didn't think it was perfect, that's why much debate surrounded its drafting process. It's a bottomline guiding document for which our country's principles are founded on and the supreme law of the land. That doesn't mean if something isn't in the Constitution it can't be a part of our government or way of life. That's just something that convenient Constitution huggers think. There is much not mentioned specifically and that's for a reason.

The security being hired for my healthcare event consists of off duty police officers from the Jurisdiction in which the event is held. They are fully licensed and authorized for, and do regular police work for the local Municipal Government. They, can, of course, call for backup in the event of any disturbance, but the officers on site, who are in full uniform, should be sufficient to deal with any problem. This is very expensive for a small, volunteer political organization. We would have preferred to spend the money on educational efforts, but this is a necessity now. Security is the largest single expense for the event, over half the total budget.

You reference "Freedom Works" as an organized mob. I don't know about them, but I do know of your long standing association with the Obama-fronted "Organizing for America." You long for the days of the "New Deal", but the fact is, it did not work. Unemployment was still sky high in 1939 after nearly ten years of FDR's brand of socialism. Thank goodness for leaders like DeMint and Brown who know we can't spend our way out of this mess.

carolinadude -
I cannot help that he voted for the first bailout (although I would rather him not have done so), but at least he had sense to stop and not the support the totally unnecessary Obama spending pork-fest. Furthermore, as he is currently my representative in Congress, I am glad that he is standing up against this horrible excuse for health care reform. We will not always like everything that our politicians do, but that does not mean that we should not support them when they are fighting for the causes that we as conservatives believe in. If you want to vote against him in 2010, that is your choice, but if Congressman Brown keeps up his almost perfect conservative voting record (96% by LCV count) as he has for almost ten years now, then he will still have my vote.

Clyburn isn't a big writer of legislation. He is a master of the process of getting bills past, a very different job.
I'm quite proud of my association with Organizing for America, however as an ordinary volunteer I can't speak for the Organization. The President can and does speak for himself, often and effectively. I'm proud to support him as an unpaid volunteer. I've never received a penny for my work for Obama or the Democratic Party.
And the New Deal did work, it worked very well until 1937 when conservatives demanded cutbacks. However, even at it's reduced level it created an America strong enough to win WWII, including a completely upgrade of the Charleston Navy Yard and the Construction of the Santee Cooper Project to supply the needed power. After 1939 a lot of the New Deal program such as WPA began to focus on Defense projects, building Navy shipyards, renovating neglected Army bases, building airports, improving the national road network.
You should remember FDR kindly, he made America strong and is the reason you are not speaking German today. The New Deal programs built the America which won the war.
Rewrite history and misinterpret the Constitution to your heart's content, but America has to work and it is beginning to work again.

I guess this schmuck forgot about the Democrats by the name of Ray Nagin and Kathleen Blanco who were in charge during Katrina. The many deaths during Katrina can be directly linked to these two idiots.
Brown is a coward and a useless village idiot. He does not represent us. Time for him to move on.

I think Katrina was a disaster for George Bush and his FEMA crew too. And Linda Ketner proved she was a serious candidate because she came close to beating our dozing Congressman with an intelligent, articulate campaign that actually talked about issues. We really need somebody who will lead rather than follow in lockstep, no questions asked.

Where did the "Rednecks with guns" crap come from? If the democrats didn't know they are trying to push an illegal and immoral project into law, they wouldn't feel it necessary to invent such blatant BS about their security problems. Please tell us where people sneaking guns into meetings has been a problem. By the way, having spent many years on the waterfront, the longshoremans hall has the provisions for "full security" because they need it and at the last count the ILA didn't have any redneck members.

He's a politician being a politician. Our out to pasture elephant hasn't got a clue. Won't face us and man up.
I was hoping Ketner would have kicked that garbage time riff raff Brown to the curb. We need representation and a voice, not a warm(we can hope) body taking up oxygen.
Good job CNSYDDDDuh. Great cognitive argument...name calling...no wonder you voted for Brown. No pain no brain.

UrGatorbait, what name calling did I use? Nothing that the individual has not revealed themselves. BTW I did not vote for Brown. IF you had bothered to read my post you would have seen that I don't care for Brown. The 1st district has not had a real Congressman since Rivers.

Brown is not an educated man. It may be difficult for him to grasp the details of the various plans.
