Jamming out to fight cancer

Tuesday, August 18, 2009

Five Lowcountry bands are jamming to further cancer awareness during a music-filled evening Friday at The Windjammer on the Isle of Palms.

Proceeds from the event will go to Roper St. Francis Cancer Center and Dragon Boat Charleston.

Headlining the event will be The Fire Apes, joined by Almost Brothers Band, Hed Shop Boys, Super Deluxe and Steel Petals. The Fire Apes are performing for the first time since recording their new, self-titled extended play. Their music has been compared to The Beatles, The Kinks and The Pretenders. The group is recording a new, full-length album with gold/platinum producer Sean O'Keefe (Fall Out Boy, Plain White T's), expected to be released sometime next spring.

"There are very few of us whose lives haven't been touched by cancer," said Fire Apes lead singer, songwriter and guitarist John Seymour. "We're excited that we can spend an evening doing what we love most and know that it's for an extremely worthy cause."

Tickets to the event, which begins at 8 p.m., are $10 per person and may be purchased at www.etix.com or at the door.

To attend, concert-goers must be 21 years or older.
