DeMint to speak at town hall event
By Schuyler Kropf
Republican U.S. Sen. Jim DeMint will address the national health care debate Monday morning on Daniel Island in an arena where space will be limited.
DeMint is scheduled to be at a Daniel Island Neighborhood Association meeting where priority will be given to those who pay the group's $12.50 attendance and breakfast cost.
Others will be allowed in as space becomes available, said Stacy Lindbergh, president of the neighborhood group.
So far, about 250 people have made reservations for a room that might hold as many as 300 at tables but possibly more, she estimated.
Meanwhile, the Charleston area's elected Republican 1st District U.S. Rep. Henry Brown did not respond to repeated inquiries on whether he planned a public forum on the issue.
With Congress on its August break, the health care debate has become a running story as members of Congress, on both sides of the aisle, have scheduled community gatherings to discuss what's being considered in Washington. An underlying theme includes accusations of uncivil tactics, including shouting matches.
DeMint spokeswoman Ryan Murphy said that given the personal nature of health care, it is not surprising that people are expressing passionate viewpoints.
"Sen. DeMint looks forward to hearing from folks on all sides of the issue and explaining his plan to make health care affordable and accessible for everyone without a government takeover," she said.
IF YOU GO
The Daniel Island gathering is set to begin at 7:30 a.m. Monday. For more information, contact DeMint's Charleston office at 727-4525. The Daniel Island Club is at 600 Island Park Drive. RSVPs also can go to slindbergh@homesc.com.

Sir it would be hard for any of us working people, that will be paying for the support for this idiotic idea of health care if it comes to be, to show up for a debate or presentation about health care during the daytime hours.
You will only be addressing those already retired and out of the system, or those on welfare that are off during the day. I'd like to see you hold a meeting somewhere central that lowcountry residents that actually work and pay for these stupid ideas through their taxes can attend soon. Thank you for the hard work you do for us...

DeMint has chosen to hold his Charleston area meeting at a suburban country club, in an area with no public transportation at a time when working families can't possibly attend, the day before classes begin at Charleston's public schools. The entire event is stacked in favor of his rich, generally retired constituency who are perfectly happy to enjoy the benefits of government sponsored single payer medicare while 700 thousand working South Carolinians and members of their families can't get care, and thanks to this meetings like this, don't get heard. It's a mockery of Democracy. It is the Senator who committed to breaking our President pandering to the right wing base.

I too am upset with what is going on in Washington and would attend a “town hall meeting”, especially the ones held by our lefty “friends” from Washington - when is the next election? I am ready to pull the big “R”! Looks like the Washington folks will do anything to avoid the unpleasantness that their colleagues have already experienced.

Senator DeMint, I read your book, "Saving Freedom," which opened my eyes about the direction this country is headed toward. I do have a question; "With all the controversy this so called 'healthcare reform' is causing why won't our representatives abandon any plan being considered, fix the Medicare system we have. Then, offer the repaired version of Medicare to those who don't have health insurance and let the rest of us continue with our freely chosen plans?" Also, has anyone ever considered that this health reform filled with vague, legalese, may have embedded within it, actual amendments to the constitution of the United States?

Sen. Dumb-mint
Are you going to refuse the LIFETIME senate health plan?
Are you going to refuse the senate federal retirement plan?
Are you going to refuse Medicare when you are eligible?
Are you going to refuse to take Social Security?
Didn't think so.
Hypocrite.
Conservativism is a sickness of the soul.

Hmmm...I wonder what kind of TEA bags will be served with breakfast? The uber wealthy ones that just can't accept the possibility of having the same health care access as the guy that cuts their grass? Or the retired flavor that is enjoing single payer govenment funded medicare but for some reason against goverment healthcare?

We've set up a progressive alternative to the DeMint breakfast on Daniel Island, an obvious trap for any liberal or progressive who goes there. They'll RSVP a handful of liberal to serve as whipping boys so they can gleefully put on a right wing show for the media. I'm not that stupid.
Details on our breakfast in Mt. Pleasant can be found at http://www.indigojournal.com/diary/10...
You'll need to register on the Organizing for America Website.
DeMint needs all the conservative support he can get on Daniel Island, not merely to pack the breakfast but to yell at any protesters outside. Tehre are protestors going to Daniel Island. Every loyal conservative should go to Daniel Island to support Jim DeMint.
We'll just be holding a little thoughtful breakfast for liberals. We already know the teabaggers hate us. We don't need to be told again. We remember for all the previous times. We don't like you either. Really we don't need to talk and since DeMint's not going to be listening to us, we would prefer to talk to each other. Besides Daniel Island is in Berkeley County, a red county. Charleston is a blue county.
So lets just enjoy our separate breakfasts in our separate counties. The Wando River should be space enough between the groups, even in South Carolina.

I'd love to go, but probably can't make it.

If you can't find one thing DeMint has done, then you aren't looking in the right place. Check out his website. Oh, and read it, not just skim through. He has some great ideas and has presented them in recent years, but the dems keep voting against him. Seems like common sense isn't in their vocabulary.
