Officials identify SC man killed in mountain fall

Monday, April 27, 2009

WALHALLA - Officials have identified a man who fell about 100 feet down a waterfall in the northwestern corner of South Carolina.

Oconee County Coroner Karl Addis said 20-year-old John Erich Gistinger of Fountain Inn died Saturday afternoon after falling at Hidden Falls.

The Anderson Independent-Mail reported Gistinger fell on U.S. Forest Service land near Mountain Rest.

The coroner said Gistinger and two other men had hiked to the falls and climbed the left side. He says the men then started to wade across the stream. The first man made it but Gistinger slipped and tried to grab a rock before he fell.

Oconee County emergency services officials say about 40 people responded to locate Gistinger.

Addis says an autopsy is planned. The fall is still under investigation.
