11-year-old girl propositioned

27-year-old arrested when he shows for meeting

GOOSE CREEK — A convicted killer apparently found an 11-year-old Summerville girl's cell phone number on her MySpace page, sent her nude photos and tried to convince her to meet him for sex, authorities said.

Marvin Douglas Clark is accused of sending naked photos of himself to an 11-year-old girl and trying to get her to meet him for sex.

The girl told her parents, and when the man showed up at the Hess station at College Park Road and Crowfield Boulevard, deputies were waiting.

"We see this happening more and more now with all the technology we have — cell phones, Blackberries and computers," Berkeley County Sheriff Wayne DeWitt said. "It's just nauseating and sickening to see adults out to take advantage of young people. This really hits the bottom."

DeWitt said a man called and sent text messages to the girl for about three days. Some of the communication included photos of himself naked, and he asked her to send photos of herself, but she did not.

"He was trying to lure her to meet him to have sex," the sheriff said. "At one point, she informed him that she was 11 years old, and that didn't stop him."

Her father contacted an investigator, who took the phone and continued to communicate with the man while pretending to be the girl.

"He on two occasions advised the defendant that this person was 11 years old," DeWitt said.

Still acting as the girl, the investigator arranged to meet the man about 1 a.m. Tuesday at the Hess station. The man was arrested when he arrived, the sheriff said.

Marvin Douglas Clark, 27, of Holly Hill, is charged with criminal solicitation of a minor, dissemination of obscene material to a minor and contributing to the delinquency of a minor. His total bond was set at $160,000, and he remained Tuesday night at the Hill-Finklea Detention Center in Moncks Corner.

Clark was on probation for killing his 61-year-old father in 2002 at their Holly Hill home, reportedly because of a petty argument.

James Clark Jr., longtime chef of the Augusta National Golf Club, and his son argued because a family friend would not braid Marvin Clark's hair, and Marvin Clark insulted the family friend, the Augusta Chronicle reported at the time.

Marvin Clark's mother, Minnie Clark, watched from the kitchen window as Clark went to the garage, returned with a long-barreled handgun and fired several shots at her husband, the newspaper article said.

Clark was charged with murder. In 2007, he pleaded guilty but mentally ill to a lesser charge of voluntary manslaughter, First Circuit Deputy Solicitor Blair Jennings said. He said the sentence was 20 years in prison, suspended to five years incarceration and five years probation.

It was not clear Tuesday whether Clark had been in jail for the five years between the 2002 slaying and the 2007 trial.

The Summerville girl's mother said her efforts to teach her daughter not to be afraid to come to her parents when something is wrong paid off in this case.

"She did really well. I'm proud of her," the mother said. "This could have turned out really horrible."

OK, let me see if I understand this...

This guy murdered his father, got a 20-year prison sentence reduced to five, yet now, according to the local news, he faces up to 28 years in prison for sending naked pictures and trying to convince this girl to have sex. Maybe it's just me, but something seems wrong with this picture.

Maybe he'll plead guilty but mentally ill to this as well and get 30 days...

What is an eleven yr old doing on Facebook? Perfect example of parents letting everyone and everything(computers) watch their kids for them. Sounds to me the state is about as irresponsible with it's convicted felons as these parents are with their child. You are lucky folks, might want to thank God your child is safe today. Might also want to tighten the security settings so that she can't let anyone on her sight. As the parent, you might want to take control of who accesses your child's site. I still think it's ridiculous for an 11 yr old to have a facebook page. Maybe the parents need to be investigated by DSS?

How can the courts give this man just 5 years in prison for killing his father, when he walked to the shed and came back with the gun? This was premeditated murder.

Put him away for life.

I don't have a face book page and have never been on the face book site, but why are people on here blaming the young girl for having a face book page. I admit her cell phone number should not have been up there.

Is this site only for adults? School me on this one, because I just never found a reason or time to create a face book page.

Wake up folks, the fact that Marvin Clark only got five years for killing his own father is a prime example of the problems of Black on Black crime that results in little or no punishment.

For decades now the Black community has complained that the "system" places less emphasis on the crimes committed by Blacks against their own people. This perpetuates a false notion that Blacks and White have a different value to society.

A Black defendant will get a lesser sentence for killing another Black than killing a White victim. This is as true a statement now as it was thirty years ago, just pay attention to the sentencing reports published in the local newspapers after each General Session court term.

And unfortunately the criminal justice system is now caught in the middle of either being called racists for pushing for harsher sentences than presently sought or being accused of being racists for not valuing Black as much as Whites. It is a no win situation either way.

I agree with others on two points:

1. It is a shame that this man was barely punished for killing his own father. It is also a shame that the irresponsible judge who imposed this joke of a sentence will not be punished for his/her poor judgment.

2. I do not believe that 11-year-olds should have Myspace pages either. BUT, if you do allow your young child to have a Myspace page... then PAY ATTENTION to what's on it! Her parents should have known exactly what was on her page, then they could have avoided this in the first place. They should also have that page set tp private and controlled access to the page. They are VERY lucky that she came to them with this before it got out of hand.

There is no privacy on the Internet. This girl should never have posted her personal information on her MySpace page even if it was private. She should have the settings for "private" if she has not done so already. However, she should not be blamed for this adult man stalking her.

#1 Messy Marvin should have went to jail for a minimum of 20 years. Personally, I think he should have been sentenced to life in prison.

#2 Perverts like Messy Marvin often visit social networking sites like MySpace, Facebook and Twitter to prey on unsuspecting teenagers and adolescents. They also will go to sites like Google to look up where certain kids go to school. They can find out if they are athletes, cheerleaders, etc. Parents need to be more vigilant and monitor what their kids do on the computer. There is no excuse. You might work. You might even have 2 or more jobs. But your main job and responsibility if you have a child or children is being a parent.

April 22, 2009 at 8:36 a.m. ( | suggest removal )

carlosthedwarf (anonymous) says...

I say that there is no privacy on the Internet because once you say something or post something on an Internet blog or website it is there permanently. Parents need to teach their children that use of the Internet or a personal computer is not a right. It is a privilege. And if you're going to use the Internet you have to establish guidelines to ensure your child's safety. Block forbidden sites from your computer.

When I was a kid my parents taught me never to talk to strangers. The same rule should apply to the Internet. And if someone suggests meeting your child, the child or teenager should suggest his or her parents meeting him or her and his/her parents first. If there is any hesitancy whatsoever, you know that this person is lying. And this person should immediately be reported to the police.

PLUFFMUDHENRY... If the "child" did not have a "myspace" page, then none of this would have happened... once again, children allowed to do teenage and adult things. A child listing her/his phone number on the internet (myspace or not)is a sure sign that he/she should not be allowed to use the computer. At the old age of 11, you would think that a parent would monitor what is being posted on "myspace"...

When you sign up for myspace you have to verify that you are a certain age, which she isn't. As far as posting her cell phone number, she is after all only 11 and probably did not recognize the dangers of doing so, this is a rough lesson to learn about that.

With that being said, I believe that this man is scum and deserves to go to jail for a long time.

I agree with so many of the posters on here, even though I don't like to "blame the victim." The parents of this little girl:

A. Gave her a cell phone
B. Let her have a Myspace page
C. Gave her un-monitored access to the internet

This is not a new phenomenon, where predators use the internet to poach their victims. While most molesters are family or close friends of the family, vigilance is still incumbent upon the parents with regards to the internet. While the girl isn't mature enough to know how to keep herself safe on the internet, and obviously lied about her age, at least she knew when to blow the whistle to her parents.

As for this Marvin Clark character... he's going to prison regardless of the outcome of this trial. He was on probation after serving five years (what?) for his father's murder... he's going away for the full 20. Add to that whatever he's just earned, and hopefully we'll not see him on the street until the Cubs win the pennant, which is to say never.

Let me just join the chorus of people saying it's ridiculous that this child a) had a cell phone, b) had a myspace page and c) had her phone number listed on there. What?? This is completely ridiculous. I'm relatively young myself so I understand the new "technological age" more than my parents do. But even I don't agree with some of the things that parents give their kids access to. Myspace should only be for adults. Period. And definitely NOT for 11 year olds.

Pervs and Predators have always been around since the dawn of time, the internet is just another way for them to get at your kids. Why make it easier by allowing this sort of behavior. The parents really should have been monitoring her more closely.

What is this guy doing out of prison after serving five years for killing someone? Our criminal justice system needs some serious work. He killed his father in cold blood and he serves less than five years. What is the solicitor's office doing? They allowed him to plead down this much.

Killed his father and only recieved 5 years in jail. Now he's going after children... if he killed someone, I highly doubt he is going to get ANY type of punishment for attempting to have relations with an 11 year old!

Besides, the parents should get in SOME sort of trouble for allowing their 11 year old to have a social site, KNOWING there are people out there like this, alot of them. Haven't they heard that facebook and myspace are a peds playground? And the STUPID girl had her phone number on the site... plus pictures... and knowing the situation, she probably had their address down or told someone where she lives.

So if this SOB gets out, they have to worry about him physically going after the young girl.

Way to go!

I want to join the chorus, too. A LOT of parents that I talk to with kids this age don't have a clue as to the dangers of a MySpace page or Facebook, or any of these things, so they allow their kids to have them.

This guy is an idiot, and by the facts of the story above definitely not one of the really dangerous predators. Predators exist out there that can figure out where children are by clues that they kids give without realizing they are giving information about themselves. The kids who are careful and monitored are still at risk.

How about this-instead of your child have a MySpace page. Teach them how to actually interact with other people by actually being involved in some sort of activity like sports, academic clubs, dance, or whatever they may have an interest in. Oh, but this would require mom to skip a nail appointment, or dad to actually be a parent...........go figure.

Nothing wrong with the 11 year old having a cell phone. It'll be awhile before my daughter has myspace, but I'm thinking on the 10 year anniversary of Columbine, and the two boys that set of the fire alarm and picked off sixth graders as they left the building, that she will have a cell phone a lot sooner than high school age. There are carriers that have programs that you can set up to monitor and watch and even limit who a child can call and who a child can receive calls from. Now, having said that, I see people posting their cell phone numbers on myspace under their status (which is still open for the public to see even if your profile is set to private) and I think it is the dumbest idea, and a cry for attention.

I think having a child have a cell phone is a great idea, especially with all the dangers in school and you never know what can happen after hours. Plus, if you discuss options with each cell phone company, see which carriers will allow you to view phone numbers and text message numbers that come in. Also, some companies will allow you to set up a tracker on your childs phone and it gives the location. I don't have kids but if I was to add another line, it will give me the location on where the other phone is at and I can view my called numbers.

I think a cell phone is a great investment for children in school as long as they are used properly and are aware of the consequences if not used properly.

As far as the internet is concerned, maybe the schools can offer a parent night and have an officer discuss the dangers of using a social site or take home a paper that has to be signed stating they know about these risks and make it mandatory that it has to be signed and returned. If that's possible, but any good parent wouldn't mind doing this.

Interesting debate on here about the cell phone for a child. They can be useful tools to help families coordinate their busy lives, but there is a fine line between tool and toy.

To echo many here, myspace and facebook accounts can be fun, but they should be private pages and no phone numbers or addresses, not even the town the child lives in, should be listed. In order for a child to have an account, they should agree to have a parent as a "friend" so everything on that account can be monitored.

Someone asked why kids shouldn't be allowed to just have one. The same reason that young children are not allowed to drive or to drink- they don't have the maturity at that age to make informed decisions about adult issues. Thankfully this turned out okay. No, its not the girl's fault, she operated within the boundaries she was given. Hopefully this will provide a lesson to area kids and their parents.

I am neither de-balled nor drugged, but last time I took a stand on something important (ethics) I got fired from my job for being "negative". CCSD sucks!

I frankly think we need to set up an area at White Point gardens and publicly bullwhip people who do this type of stuff . You know, 50 lashes. Charge admission, have a festival, serve cold beer !

However, murderers (particularly of your own father) should fry, and directly after trial ( ala Saddam swinging- perhaps the Muslims aren't so wrong about everything! ).

I can't understand the mentality of letting someone who did something like that - walk away without serving their full sentence. I don't give a damn how overcrowded the jails may be! This guy should not have been on the street. Can you hear the parole board " SO, you blasted your dad to death with a shotgun cause you couldn't get your hair braided? Are you sorry you did it? Yes? OK, you can go! .......WTF ?

I bet a whole lot of parents have had their eyes opened by this, so don't be too hard on this child's parents. Those of us who are not perverts sometime fail to understand just how devious and determined the perverts really are.

Beyond belief, I find myself agreeing with PluffmudHenry

"Why are we questioning an 11-y-o's having a MySpace page? The cellphone number was a bad idea, but other than that, we're blaming the intended victim."
===============================================
Numerous posters seem to have come to the conclusion that the child and her parents are at fault then add some comment about the perpetrator as an after thought.

A eleven year old child in this situation shares no blame. Especially considering that she was sharp enough to tell her parents thus possibly preventing some other less informed child of becoming a victim.

If more children were educated about the pitfalls lurking in cyberspace and acted like this little girl did, the success rate of these pedophiles claiming a victim would be reduced dramatically.

Does anyone know weather or not the parents of this girl had given her instructions on what to do if contacted by perverts like this guy?

Ignoring these perverts just entices them to continue trolling until they catch a child who has not been made aware of the danger they pose.

I agree that revealing the cell phone number was not a good idea but there again it has no address connection associated with it and can be a useful tool for LE to trap the perpetrators.

I agree with several of you that this girl should have had better privacy settings on her myspace page and her parents should have been monitoring it better. When I found out that my 12 year old neice got a myspace page I fipped out for this very reason until I found out that she had the privacy settings in place and her mom watched her account closely. That is what these parents should have done. I think anybody that beleives this never would have happend if she didn't have a page is an idiot however. Child predators vastly predate the internet. Granted it does give better access to these people but the problem would still remain without it. I applaude the little girl for being wise enough to tell her parents about it instead of being like so many girls you hear about. And as far as finding her number, well maybe the parents do watch her page. This article didn't say how he got her number on it, she very well could have left it in a comment on a friends page that also wasn't private. There are a lot of things that COULD have happend before we go and say they are bad parents. The kid should have had her page protected to friends only though. This sicko should never been allowed back on the street after killing his father. After this incident he should be strung up by his testicles on the courthouse steps until they fall off and then he can spend the rest of his life in jail. Scum like this should be handled swiftly and harshly.

1) If my math is correct, this scum bag was around 20 yrs old when he killed his father. He had to have been in jail from the time of his arrest, based upon the terms of his sentence. He probably had a high profile attorney, too, in order to get such a deal for murder.

2) If he was mentally ill, why wasn't he committed or monitored. Probably due to the overload on probation officers --- he got lost in the system, to his benefit.

3) I have 3 daughters --- how in the 'heck' can you allow your child to a) have unsupervised access to the internet b) have a Myspace or Facebook page c) have a cell phone and d) have photographs and her cell phone number, as well as a profile, on a site that is KNOWN for its predatory perverts....

4) There has been a case where a judge sentenced to rapists to castration and probation rather than prison. They appealed, and the SC Courts and the high profile attorneys had it overturned.

Instead of our pathetic SC legislators being more concerned about honoring "Miss SC Cow Barn of 2009", they should be writing laws that will keep people like this in jail........indefinitely. Our legislators are a bunch of scum bags.....not too much more developed that this creep.

I can assure you...HE DID NOT GET THE 11 YEAR OLDS PHONE NUMBER THROUGH MYSPACE OR FACEBOOK. Detectives believe it was simply a wrong number and unfortunitly that number was went straight to her voice mail which DID NOT SAY HER NAME. This could have happened to any child. I'm just greatful it happened to one that was brave enough to come forward and tell a parent!

sandnateater....really? DSS? You really think DSS should investigate a mother for letting her child have a Facebook account? (Even though the article clearly says it was Myspace not Facebook.) I think DSS has plenty to do when they aren't looking for parents with loose internet rules in their home.
So you are from Mount Pleasant (Yes I spelled it out Mr. MP) Big Freakin' Whoop! I have read your nasty comments judging people on where they live...."it must be a rat hole" you say because there is an offender living in someone's neighborhood. You are so naive to think that this doesn't happen in Mount Pleasant.
I feel sorry for you.

When it comes out that this man did NOT get the phone number through facebook or myspace or lack of parenting skills I EXPECT YOU ALL ARE GOING TO APOLIGIZE RIGHT??? Stop being so quick to judge the victim!! Or to blame the parents!! This was not their fault. They DID monitor their childs myspace page AND there was NOT a phone number on her page AND her parents are both friends on her page...along with her grandmother, aunts and uncles, cousins and various other relatives!!! There was not one person on her page that her family did not know personally! The profile WAS set on private. Plus there is absolutely NO EVIDENCE to support that he even got it from myspace at all!!! People need to get their facts straight before judging!! I know this family and I can assure you they are NOT at all the bad parents you are assuming.

So just to correct all of you fools for blaming the child. This child did not have her number on myspace. This was an instance where the predator called a number and misdialed. She answered and told him it was the wrong number and politely hung up. That is when the txting began. He was informed she was 11 on more than one occasion. These " irresponsible" parents quickly took her phone and began the process of getting this guy arrested. Their quick thinking and intense research on this guy greatly contributed to the capture of this guy. It took less than 48 hours to get this guy off the street and I credit the parents. I am so grateful that we were all lucky enough that this creep contacted the wrong family. Not sure where the post and courier got their info but a retraction would be in great order. Bad reporting, bad fact gathering. The predator never even knew she had a myspace page.

A lot of bad decisions were made--11 year old with a cell phone, my space account that was not closely monitored by her parents making it easy for people like Marvin Clark to have telephonic access to her. But, I applaud this child for realizing that something was not right and had a solid relationship with her parents to the point she went to them with the situation. Hey Guys she is only 11 Marvin Clark is a 27 year old so called "insane" MURDERER. Thank God he was not able to make contact with her and I hope the justice system make it that he does not have contact with anyone for a long time.

Why is it that everytime something happens people always blaim the parents or other things like myspace? Channel 2 had a interview with them tonight and it said the myspace was watched by the parents and that the page is set to private so know one could see it but her friends and family and the number was not posted on there. A parent can be the best one in the world and one thing gets by them and they are to blaim, that is just crazy talk. What about the parents teaching her to come to them when something was not right? To me the parenting was there and he is to blaim not the victims. How many parents out there who are commenting rudely feel that they are doing everything they can to prevent every little situation that comes into there childs life? If you say you are then you are just fooling yourself.

The reason that people are saying that the myspace page should be monitored more closely is because THE ARTICLE says that he got her number on myspace. If you know the family good for you. There is always someone on all of these articles that knows the family that wants to get upset because people are commenting on an article which is exactly why the post and courier put this here. If you have a problem with people talking about what was in the article. Tell the reporter to get his facts straight, not the people reading the report.

Thank God this child is safe and while its good that she shared this with her parents, the blame needs to be placed on her parents. I am well aware that some of you may disagree and that's fine, but the truth is that her parents placed her in harms way, # 1 by giving her a cell, and by allowing her to have a myspace page. She is a child, plain and simple. Where in the world would an 11 year old child be. that her parent/parents woudl not know where she/his is?
That crap about her cell number not being posted on her page, is crap, yes it was, how else did he get it? He isn't smart enough to guess it, since he drove from Holly-Hill after she told him her age. Let this be a lesson to all parents, let kids be kids, and not want- to -be adults or teenagers. This one's on her parents, like it or not, they placed her in harms way, someone needs to check them.

Is no one paying attention to other posts???? This article is misinformed- THE PHONE NUMBER DID NOT COME FROM HER SUPERVISED, YES SUPERVISED MYSPACE PAGE!!!!! It was a misdialed number that happened to be her phone!!!!! I know personally that this family is VERY responsible and VERY capable of raising children just fine, and everyone did EVERYTHING they should have from the very beginning.
Pay attention!!!
Another point I would like to make, the article makes it sound like the 11 year old saw all the messages from this guy, she did not have her phone when this started to unfold, it was the detective communicating with him- not her.

I have to say I'm proud of this kid for knowing what this man was doing is wrong and telling her parents! If it wasn't for her actions he would be trying to do the same thing to another child. I know she had a myspace page and normally I would think 11 yrs old is too young for that... however, I feel she was well educated on the dangers and was prepared to tell someone. Big props to the Kid!!

First off you are a red skin fan so we can understand a little of your crazy talk. But on another note what you are saying is that its the parents fault because she has a cell phone right. So the way that you see it in your mind it would also be the parents fault if a teacher at a school did this because the parents dropped her off at school. You see how stupid it sounds for you to say its the parents fault. no matter what a 27yo knows right from wrong and its a shame people stick up for him.
