South Carolina 14, USC Upstate 6
SPARTANBURG — Whit Merrifield hit his first career grand slam and Andrew Crisp and Nick Ebert each drove in three runs as South Carolina defeated USC Upstate, 14-6, at Harley Park.
South Carolina, which hosts Clemson tonight, improves to 27-14 for the season. The loss drops the Spartans to 10-29.
Merrifield was 2-for-4 with five RBI, which matched an individual season high by a Gamecocks player this season. Crisp was 3-for-5 with three RBIs with Ebert, Kyle Enders, Bobby Haney and DeAngelo Mack tallying two hits apiece as well. Ebert also homered for his team-leading 14th of the season.
South Carolina starting pitcher Jay Brown (3-0) tied a career-high with 6 2/3 innings of work. He allowed five runs on seven hits with five strikeouts and four walks allowed.
USC Upstate starter Austin Moyer (2-5) took the loss.
The Gamecocks reached double digits for the 11th time this year in a game by the fifth inning.
