Reetz to take reins for Porter-Gaud football
By Philip Bowman
Porter-Gaud has hired Rick Reetz as its head football coach.
Reetz, who has 20 years of experience, was coach at Cumberland High School in Cumberland, R.I., for three years before being announced as the Cyclones' new hire. Prior to that, he was coach at Moses Brown School, one of the oldest prep schools in the country, which is in Providence, R.I.
Reetz took over at Cumberland, which was in a rebuilding phase. He went 3-4 in the regular season in 2007 and followed that up by going 3-4 in the regular season last fall and 1-1 in the playoffs. The freshman teams won two state championships in his three years.
He was named the state coach of the year, the Division II-B coach of the year and was the Providence Gridiron Club's coach of the year.
He was selected to be an assistant in next year's Rhode Island vs. Connecticut all-star game and would have been the Rhode Island head coach in 2010 if he would have stayed at the school.
At Moses Brown School, Reetz compiled a record of 62-17 and led the team to its first ever championship. Moses Brown School is a Quaker school founded by abolitionist Moses Brown in 1784.
"Coach Reetz comes to us with an outstanding background and ability to grow programs," Porter-Gaud coach Ed Steers said. "He will be a great asset to Porter-Gaud."
Bishops win
The Bishop England baseball team cruised to a 4-0 record to win the Andrews Invitational.
Two promising sophomores led the Bishops: Jimmy Lindberg and Morgan Bastian.
Lindberg was named the tournament MVP. He was 9-for-12 with a homer, two doubles and 10 RBIs. He also picked up a win on the mound.
Bastian was 9-for-12 with two doubles and a triple. He had four RBIs and stole two bases.
"Both kids work very, very hard on the diamond and weightroom," Bishop England coach Bill Collier said. "We've moved Bastian to leadoff the last couple of games because his on-base percentage of .687 is real good. His future looks good for us, and same for Jimmy Lindberg. I'm just glad we have them here."
Brison Celek, who has signed to play for South Carolina, went 5-for-12 with two doubles, three home runs and 11 RBIs.
Pitcher Ryan Connolly, who has signed to play for Coastal Carolina, was 2-0 with 12 strikeouts.
Wando golfers win
The Wando boys' golf team won the 10th annual Anderson Brothers Bank Invitational, which was played at the Country Club of South Carolina and Dusty Hills Country Club.
The Warriors posted a two-day score of 600, 23 shots better than second-place finisher Greenwood. Waccamaw was third, 33 shots off the pace.
Wando's Jackson Moore was the medalist with a two-day total of 144
Reed Kerwin tallied a 149, Cody Hughes shot a 159 and Blake Banks carded a 160.
Nichols signs
Goose Creek pitcher Eli Nichols signed a scholarship to play for Coker College.
He's played travel ball for the Carolina Fury and the Goose Creek Diamondbacks. He also played football at Goose Creek.
He's solid in the classroom, as well. He's an honors student and a member of student council and the Beta Club. He also is a Palmetto Boys State representative.
