Controlled burn in national forest creates smoke, ash in West Ashley

Staff report
Friday, April 17, 2009

A dark cloud over the Charleston area is being caused by a controlled burn in the Francis Marion National Forest, according to the National Weather Service.

Winds carried the smoke from the forest to areas as far away as West Ashley and Kiawah Island. There was at least one report of ash falling on parts of West Ashley.

The winds were expected to shift later tonight, pushing the cloud back toward the forest.

As a result, Awendaw and Huger could experience visibility problems tonight.
