SC deputy, trooper facing Iowa hunting charges
WEST UNION, Iowa (AP) - A deputy and trooper from South Carolina face theft charges that claim they illegally filed for Iowa in-state hunting licenses.
The Fayette County Attorney's Office charged 32-year-old Charles Holmes and 33-year-old Phillip Morris with theft by deception. Holmes is a deputy in Saluda County and Morris is a highway patrol trooper.
Assistant attorney Nathan Lein says the men have claimed Iowa residency during deer and turkey seasons since 2004. They were charged with violation since November 2006 due to Iowa's statute of limitations.
Charges were filed April 8. Formal arraignments will be April 29.
Lein says Holmes is believed to own property near Elgin, where the men hunted.
Authorities began investigating after receiving a tip.
