Spurrier's reputation, USC season on the line

FACEOFF: Who's in more trouble, Clemson or USC?

Could this Gamecocks squad be one of the worst teams Steve Spurrier has been associated with since 1976 when he quarterbacked the 0-14 Tampa Bay Buccaneers?

It has potential.

With a 3-2 record and both losses coming against Southeastern Conference foes (Vanderbilt and Georgia), Spurrier's USC team is looking at a tough, uphill climb against the likes of Ole Miss, Kentucky, LSU, Tennessee, Arkansas, Florida and Clemson to finish off this season.

The Gamecocks are likely to be favored in only one of those final seven games (Arkansas). It could get ugly. Like last year when they lost five straight down the stretch.

All the preseason hope and optimism went down the drain early with a loss to the Commodores, and it's continued to erode as USC displays yet another impotent offense that barely gained wins over Wofford (23-13) and Alabama-Birmingham (26-13).

Nobody has more to lose in this downward spiraling scenario than Spurrier himself, who put his hall-of-fame reputation on the line when he came to Columbia.

USC fans are used to this kind of disappointment, but it's starting to drive Spurrier crazy. If he can't get it done this year, you have to wonder how long he's going to bang his head against this wailing wall.

Lighten up Ken! Worst team since 0-14 Tampa? Come on! He's 3-2 with both losses to ranked teams. The season isn't on the line any more than it is any other week. Ole Miss is only favored by 2 and USC could easily be favored over Arkansas, Kentucky, and possibly Clemson the way they are playing. Easy for the Ole Ball Coach to go 7-5 with a bowl game. Are you really that upset that UGA lost so much that you take it out on Spurrier because he had UGA's number at Florida??? You forget who your readers are.....

Ken, if Holtz could not change them and Spurrier, of all people, can't do it, then it is time for the gamecocks to leave the SEC and find a school where they can play. They just can't compete in the SEC.

It's Tuesday Burger and you have bashed Clemson(Monday) and now USC today. What's for tomorrow? I will give some with your next article. Nick and the gang at Bama cheated somehow to get that 31-0 halftime lead over your Dawgs or maybe you can blame that uniform selection. No, I doubt you will write about the UGA game. That game has been wiped from your small sports memory.

Gee Burger, we expected no less from you and your UGA degree. So tell me Kenny Boy, how bout them Dawgs? Number one to number none.

Ken is mad because his alma mater and his kids' alma mater (Georgia and Clemson) were both embarrassed by the Crimson Tide - so he's got to make himself feel better somehow - he can't cry in his beer.

Wow...no love for the GA Dawg, Mr. Burger...

What Mr. Burger is trying to say is that Coach Spurrier, who won at Duke (at DUKE!!) and turned Florida into the powerhouse it is today, has not been able to do the same at USC. USC has all the tools to get it done, but just can't, and that will have an effect on his coaching legacy.

bigriver1,
Do you want to place a bet that they will not win another game (I would willing to put my paycheck on it)?
True their offensive does suck, but we could see this from a mile away, they have just had trouble get talented big guys(offensive linemen). There defense is more than good enough to win some games!
Yet, they should still have a winning season, except for Florida, LSU and maybe Ole Miss, the rest of the season not that tough!

let's talk how your tuff little pups got destroyed on national TV by the Alabama Slamas!

USC offense in not in good shape.
#1 ranked defense in the nation, didn't mention that one, huh,

Thanks for remindering all your readers that we play in the toughest conference in all of NCAA football and yes every game is a tough game. Sure can't be said for any other conference in the entire South or even the East Coast. Oh and good luck with Florida & LSU too!

This article is absolutely ridiculous. bigriver, you have demonstrated your ignorance yet again.

Currently, the Gamecocks have the #1 defense in the country. That's better than every other team in the nation for you Clemtech graduates.

For the record, Clemson lost yet another game in which they were favored. Anyone know which team has lost more games in which they were favored than any other in the last 4 1/2 seasons? You guessed it: Clemtech. You guys are the personification of underachievement.

In 10 years, Bowden has not managed to win an ACC Championship with far superior talent in a mediocre conference, yet somehow, Spurrier is given flack for not doing it in the nation's toughest conference with mediocre talent in FOUR YEARS?!?!?

Spurrier is building a core of tough young players around which he will continue to build our team. On offense, Garcia, Smelley, McCollum and Hilary are a stable of talented young QB's. Maddox, Baker and Mr. Kenny Miles are the future at RB. The nation's top WR class from a couple years back are soon to come into their own. The nation's #6 OG committed yesterday.

On defense, we've already got replacements for our entire defensive backfield, Akeem Auguste, Chris Culliver and Antonio Allen to name a few. Recent LB commitments Straughter and Dickerson will form a fearsome LB corps, not to mention Shaq Wilson, who is already contributing. A deep and young DL will continue to improve.

If anything, the best times for this team are in the future. Our offense will continue to improve and mature all year, Garcia will get significant gametime and become the gamebreaker we all know he can be.

Watch out for that last game of the year, Tiglet fans... Your history of mediocrity and underachieving is well-documented and it isn't over yet!

ertman - i am guessing your new to college football. this history you reference.....did you bother to look into the fact that usc has an all time record under .500? i'm guessing that one escaped you but i think any rational person would define mediocrity in said manner. did you get into usc last year and decide just this past season that you are fan? neither team in this state is worth a damn but check your facts before posting idiotic statements. you've now taken the title of 'usc's bigriver1' from sbs920 who's found common sense. congratulations!

The Total Defense is skewed at this point in the season. Teams that Front load (like USC) with Cupcakes tend to rank high early in the season.

Florida State is 3rd in Defense!!!!

When you play Wofford, UAB, Chattanoga and Western Carolina you tend to look pretty good on Defense.

Both State teams are Dreadful!

eyeinthesky,

at this point in the season, if you had to make a choice,
CU defense or USC defense. The choice is obvious. . .

Bama embarrasses CU
GA pins 14 on USC
4-0 Vandy pins 24 on USC
unranked MD owns 2nd half against CU

USC has a good defense, CU does not. WF,BC,GT,FSU,USC will prove this fact again and again.

Both teams are just "offensive" on offense.
USC does little with average talent.
CU does even less with above average talent.

only two good teams i see on that one are florida & lsu...the rest of the games they should be competitive in. maybe ole miss too but haven't seen too much of them except for when they beat florida.

sadly, no telling how good/bad clemson will be at season's end, but at least tennessee & arkansas are borderline godawful. oh, and haven't seen kentucky, so don't care about them. that one could be a toss-up.

point is, they should at least be competitive in 5 of the last 7, at least for a few quarters, with that very slim outside shot of upsetting uf or lsu. (had to give the gamecocks some hope lol)

ertman - you are the classic Gamecock fan singing the classic Gamecock refrain . . . "Wait 'til NEXT year". Thanks for telling us who has already signed on for NEXT year as well as how the nation's top recruiting class of receivers from a couple of years ago "will soon come into their own". When will "NEXT YEAR" finally get here and we see a competitive Gamecock team? When will Steve Spurrier, the SUPPOSED offensive "genius", actually produce some offense at South Carolina?

idennis, check the facts. Georgia is now number 9, 10 or 11 nationally, depending on which poll you view (apparently, you have checked neither).

I am no fan of Burger's, but I will take my degree from the University of Georgia over one from a college in South Carolina any day.

September 30, 2008 at 9:52 p.m. ( | suggest removal )

Upstater (anonymous) says...

wonderdog - I don't know what kind of degree you have from UGA, but the US News and World Report college rankings show UGA as the overall number 20 public college in America. Clemson is the overall number 22 public college in America. Not too much difference there in my way of looking at it. However, I'll give you the possibility that certain degrees or majors are clearly more highly respected and ranked at UGA over CU or USC. Other degrees or majors may be reversed in their rankings with CU or USC ahead of UGA.

I agree with you, Upstater. My post was in response to a slap at Burger's degree from UGA. Again, I am not a fan of Burger's, but our journalism school is highly regarded and has had an excellent reputation for a very long time.
