Father, son wounded in stabbing

Both expected to survive after father intervened in incident in front of house

A father was stabbed several times after he tried to step between his son and a group of people who came to their West Ashley home Sunday afternoon, the Charleston County Sheriff's Office said.

Dennis Preston Redick, 45, suffered life-threatening injuries in the attack, sheriff's Maj. John Clark said. His son, John Redick, 18, a senior at West Ashley High School, also was stabbed, though his wounds were not as serious.

Both men are expected to recover.

The incident happened in front of the house at 1898 Old Parsonage Road where the father and son live. Detectives had little initial information to release on the group of at least three who showed up at the home, or the reason for the violence. To investigators, the incident did not appear random.

"We don't know what the motive is, but it's obvious from what happened that these people know each other," Clark said.

An incident report lists several witnesses to events during and afterward.

One was a member of nearby St. Timothy's Anglican Catholic Church who had stayed after the morning service to help with an upcoming yard sale. As Mary Hoyle left the parish house with four or five other church members around 1:30 p.m., some loud noise drew her attention.

"I heard a loud argument over there, a really loud argument," Hoyle said Monday.

Two "loud, crisp" bangs followed about 15 seconds apart. They sounded to her like gunshots.

She walked toward the scene and saw a man lying in the roadway. A few other men stood near him.

Clark said deputies have not confirmed that any shots were actually fired.

An incident report says that the elder Redick had an 18-inch cut on his lower back. The son told authorities that he knew the suspects and that they left the area in a blue Ford Explorer. Deputies interviewed several other potential witnesses in the area. They released no other details or suspect information.

Zane Good, a friend who also lives at the Redick home, on Monday said that the father and son were recovering in a local hospital and were expected to recover. He said that Dennis Redick, a self-employed house painter, remained in intensive care following surgery and that John Redick was up and moving about.

"They are recovering, but it's a slow thing," Good said.

Good said he was present during the incident Sunday afternoon, but he declined to comment about it.

"...a group of people..."?

I saw a group of people in the mall yesterday...wonder if it was them. I also saw a group of people on TV last night...wonder if that might be them...

Maybe they just don't want to release any more detail than that.

Sounds to me like it might be a "your kid picked a fight with my kid" situation, but then again, some of the kids these days couldn't care less about stabbing someone.

Idiots...Hope they nail the perps to a tree.

The media needs take note of knife violence. I got a feeling there's a increase in this activity and we need more regulation in the purchase and sale of this item. Maybe if we get a handle on this now we might be able to lower the numbers of incidents of knife violence.

I live in the area and I have attended the church in the past - but I was home and I didnt hear a thing.....but it worries me that the level of violence is rising and that people just assume that the way to solve things is to attack each other.....

Jimmy it's a start. I realizes the knife is just an object but the liberals and the media prefer to deal with objects more than the human condition and the reason we do such things to our fellow human beings.

WOW. The comments are light on this one. Why because it didn't happen downtown on the eastside. I'm amazed.

sc4peace (anonymous) says...

yeah that's exactly why- because it happened in an area it doesn't usually happen- Downtown on the Eastside- it's expected- so it is what it is

Put them and their Mother Away. Step on my property and I will defend my family and myself. And it won't be with a knife.
It's like the older man in Charleston a few years back who woke up to shots being fired in his own yard. Didn't know who or what they were firing at. But when the older man shot back out in his yard and connected. He was protecting his home, his family, and property. And I am for that.
These people came asking for trouble.
Now look who is in the hospital. The owners of the property.

This incident just means that the losers that used to go to St Andrews High Scool have procreated and now their kids go to the new West Ashley High. Don't underestimate the west ashley area for gang activity--it's ussually white trash and they use crow bars and knives and attack in packs. They are obviously still afraid of a fair fight.

I commend the father for protecting the son and I hope for his complete speedy recovery. there are a lot of charges that will be brought up on all of them and the adult is going to pay dearly. The parent is supposed to teach their children by example, where in the hell did this beotch go to parenting school!!!!!!! these "teens" are already headed down a road of violent crime and the mother is the leader of the pack! How pathetic!!!

Five members of the same West Ashley family have been arrested in Sunday's stabbing of a father and son for an attack that a sheriff's spokesman described as a feud that got out of hand.

Officials aren't sure what prompted the stabbing, but it appears the quarrel escalated to the point that all the members of the family Â-- including three juveniles, one as young as age 12 - were involved by jumping out a vehicle and taking part in the attack.

Maj. John Clark announced the arrests today in connection to the stabbing of Dennis Preston Redick, 45, and his son, John Redick, 18, a senior at West Ashley High School. Both men are expected to recover.

Arrested were Patrick Scott Martin Sr., 38; Irene Martin, 35; Ricky Jay Martin, 17; and two juveniles.

Each was charged with two counts of lynching, second degree and will appear before a bond judge at 3 p.m. today.

Another suspect, Patrick Martin Jr., is still being sought.

A 12-year-old was not charged but was believed to have been involved in the fight. All are residents of 1922 Planters Drive in Charleston, where they were arrested.

Good grief - the 10:00 news just ran a story on this. Reports are that this fight was the result of a long running feud......looks like the Hatfields and McCoys. Mom, Dad and the chilluns' attack Redick and his young'n, who proclaimed to a reporter, "if they come to my yard, I gonna hurt 'em".

What a bunch of rednecks.
