Wando rides takeaways

WANDO 24, COLLETON COUNTY 20

The Post and Courier

MOUNT PLEASANT — If Wando smelled victory Friday night against Colleton County, it had to be because Warriors linebacker D.J. Davis had a nose for the football.

Davis came up with three fumble recoveries, an interception and a sack and Wando held on to beat the Cougars, 24-20, on Friday night at Wando Field.

"He played a great game," Wando coach Bob Hayes said. "He's a senior two-year starter, and he's a leader. Our defense played great all night."

Even with Davis' heroics, it was down to the wire for the Warriors (3-2).

Trailing 21-14, Colleton County (1-4) drove to the Wando 13-yard line only to turn the ball over after a big first-down completion.

Fortunately for the Cougars, Wando fumbled it right back.

Colleton County quarterback Kevin Adams scored on a 13-yard run, but the Cougars missed the extra point and trailed 21-20 heading into the fourth quarter.

The Cougars had the ball at midfield when Davis came up with an interception that set up the Warriors on the Colleton County 41.

That led to a 30-yard field goal by Sims Parker that put the Warriors ahead 24-20 with 6:43 to play.

"Colleton County came to play," Hayes said. "I told the kids that. It was a huge win for us. It got us over the hump."

It was all Colleton County early on.

The Warriors found themselves back on their heels, trailing 14-0 in the first quarter, but didn't waste any time regaining the lead.

Lee Oree scored on a 38-yard run to get the scoring started for the Warriors, and a 30-yard touchdown run by QB Michael Paul tied it at 14 with 8:05 to play in the first half.

Wando took the lead on a 46-yard TD pass from Paul to Zach Hart with 5:56 to play in the half.

"Being down 14-0 is tough to come back from mentally," Hayes said. "This team fought back. I'm proud of that. Offensively, we played well in the first half but had some miscues in the second half that we've got to work on."

The defense played its part by forcing two fumbles, both recovered by Davis, who also had a fumble recovery in the third quarter.

Colleton County jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter thanks to a couple of big plays.

Willie Grant scored on a 62-yard pass from Adams on the Cougars' second possession of the game.

Moments later, an interception by Colleton County linebacker Jamal Parker and a 40-yard return set up the Cougars at the Wando 10-yard line.

Two plays later, Adams passed 11 yards to Andre Collums for the touchdown that put the Cougars ahead 14-0 with 6:17 left the first quarter.

"We had good start, and then we just couldn't seem to settle down after that and get things going," Cougars coach Leroy Riley said.
