Swimmers rescued toddler, authorities say; mother arrested on child abuse charge
SUMMERVILLE — On the last day of Blaise Spoerl's life, he fell into a swimming pool and nearly drowned while his mother and her boyfriend were drinking, arguing and listening to music nearby, authorities said.
Other swimmers at the Weatherstone community pool had to rescue the 22-month-old boy, police say, as he fell into the water "multiple times" without wearing any sort of life jacket.

Summerville police this week arrested Jennifer Spoerl on one count of unlawful conduct towards a child, a week after they jailed her boyfriend, Justin Hillerby, on charges of causing the boy's death later that day.
Spoerl, who could not be reached for comment on Friday, could face up to 10 years in prison if convicted.
Police say that Spoerl "did place the victim at unreasonable risk of harm," according to the affidavit in the case.
Blaise was found covered in blood and dead in his crib Sept. 15. Initially, police called the death suspicious but did not arrest anyone. At the time, Hillerby told the police that "he thought Blaise might have fallen by the pool earlier."
Spoerl told The Post and Courier about the outing last week.
"It was a normal day, we spent the day at the pool," she said. "We ate dinner, put him to bed and when we woke up, he was already passed."
At the time, Spoerl said that she wondered if her son might have had water in his lungs.

The affidavit in her case offers a detailed account of the day. The affidavit, compiled using interviews with Spoerl and several witnesses at Weatherstone community pool, says that Blaise fell into the water several times during a family outing.
Witnesses say Spoerl and Hillerby were having an argument, and she told police that her son had fallen into the water without a flotation device while she was packing a cooler with beer, other drinks and Jell-O.
Blaise died within hours after his trip to the pool. Police reports suggest that Spoerl left the boy with Hillerby that evening while she went out with friends. In the affidavit that led to his arrest Sept. 17, Hillerby said he had put Blaise in the corner after the boy spilled his beer.
At some point in the evening, Hillerby hit the child in the head with his knee. While the child lay on the floor moaning, Hillbery told him to "walk it off."
Originally, Hillerby had told police the child fell asleep while eating in his high chair, but police reports say the child could not hold his head up. Hillerby said he hit the child's head on a door frame and the crib while putting him to bed.
Blaise was found dead the next morning. The autopsy found that he died of blunt trauma to the head. Hillerby is being held without bail on a charge of homicide by child abuse, and no hearing is scheduled. He remains in the Berkeley County jail. Spoerl was released on a $20,000 surety bond Wednesday, and was not jailed.
This is only the latest trouble for Spoerl. She also faces a simple assault charge in connection with a fight she had with another woman involved with Hillerby. Melissa Georgoulis told Summerville police that she was having a drink with Hillerby at Dorchester Lane on May 29 when Spoerl came in, threw a drink on Hillerby and punched her in the nose. Earlier this week, Spoerl told the newspapers she had had two fights with Georgoulis, but did not want to talk about it.
Georgoulis filed another complaint with Summerville police Sept. 17, claiming that Spoerl had made harassing calls to her on the day Hillerby was charged with her son's death.
Georgoulis, 31, has a son with Hillerby but described Hillerby to The Post and Courier as violent when he's drinking. She says Hillerby was with her the night before he and Spoerl took Blaise to the pool on the last day of Blaise's life.
"She says the media is making him look bad and the police are making him look bad," Georgoulis said. "Well you know what, he is bad."

i have cried off and on for 2 weeks over that poor child and how he was treated so cruelly by two alcoholics.......it really sickened me......everytime i see my 20 month old daughter i wonder how in the world someone could take out their aggressions on a tiny child who has just begun to walk and talk ( my daughter knows all of maybe 10 words tops).....that baby didn't even know what a beer was and yet he was killed over it.......this story is tragic from start to finish.......my only consolation is that Blaise is in heaven where someone loves him and his needs are being met.....RIP Blaise......may you finally get the love you so deserved.......i am glad you are away from both of those monsters.......they never deserved your sweet face......you never asked to be born.......yet they acted like it was your fault for being here......this whole story broke my heart......it truly truly did.......what kind of a mother doesn't check on her child once she comes back in from being gone???? that alone is enough for me to know she didn't care for her child......and to leave a child without food til 11 the next morning while she slept it off???......once again, let me say, i am glad you are away from those awful awful people Blaise.....may God treat you with the love you rarely if ever got from the family you had here........

precious child from his family.Now I clearly understand!He was taken to protect him forever from these two animals that call themselves human beings.White trash thugs are what they are.Now I know she is not the one who ultimatly killed this little boy,but she is the one who is ultimatly reponsible.Even animals protect their babies!What I can't imagine is what either of the two women saw in that loser to fight over. I only wish that they could charge the mother with a more serious offense. She was responsible for leaving that baby with a drunk and abusive man.
From all accounts she wasn't much better. I have my doubts that all of her screaming on that horrible morning had anything to do with the death of her son. More than likely she was more concerned with getting into trouble.
Where is the maternal love? I don't think anyone has seen any sign of this emotion from this woman.

Just a thought but if people saw how Blaise was being neglected, why didn't someone call the police THAT afternoon??? Surely they would have known they were drunk & maybe Blaise could have been saved. Shame on those who didn't. I had thought that if someone had called the police, because of the way these two were carrying on at the pool, then possibly they would have been arrested for drunk and disorderly conduct. There appears to have been so many witnesses to their disgusting behavior, as well as to Hillerby's verbal abuse to the child.
If this was a neighborhood with a pool, then residents were paying homeowner fees for the maintenance of this pool.
If I were a resident, I would be damned if I would have put up with trash like this ruining everyone's day.
How could anyone just sit back and watch this going on? Was there not one single man in the bunch that would have stood up to Hillerby? Did everyone just pack up their kids and go home?
Most people that I know, particularly men, would never have stood for this type of behavior going on around their children.
Little Blaise was repeatedly pulled form the water. Why was this allowed to happen?
There are just so many questions and apparently no justifiable answers.

I hope all of you who condone corporal punishment for children wake up. Children remain the last unprotected segment of out society. Any level of physical violence against children should be outlawed. I know, people are going to say that a swat here or there doesn't count. People are going to say " my momma did this or my daddy did that" and I turned out alright. Well think about it, maybe you didn't. I feel she is responsible for the child's death. She did the strike the blow that led to her baby's horrible death, but she intentionally left him with someone she witnessed abuse her child. It does sound as though abuse was a "normal day" in their lives. She made need some lessons to teach her the difference between normal and abusive and I'm hoping some "big mommas" in the jail will be her teachers!
In defense of Melissa, Justin's other woman. She has not defended him at all, matter of fact, she says at the end of the article "he is bad". I saw an interview where she said she had banned Justin from her house for spanking their child. I don't think some of the posts are being fair to her. The article states that Jennifer punched her in the nose. She was defending herself not fighting over Justin as one of the post suggest. Remember Jennifer is the one defending Justin. May they both rot in hell.

I was walking my dog the other day and she was out WATERING HER LAWN!! Her brown dying grass is the LEAST of her worries. She was out smiling like she did not just bury her son, was not arrested and faces 10 years in jail, and like her 8 year old was not taken from her! WTF????? It took everything I had not to say something to her and let my dog get a piece of her. She makes me so sick I can not even see straight!! White trash does not even begin to describe these people. I am sick of the news vans in my neighborhood, I am sick of hearing about these 2 losers! I want to see them both suffer a long, horrible, painful and lonely death! I would like to see it done quickly too...if I have to look at her again acting like mother frigin Theresa, I think I will say something to her! Those of us that have been mourning this poor child and shed more tears for her children than she has, would like to start sleeping at night again! Every time I look at my kids, I see that child's sweat face and wonder what he endured in that house with those to monsters!! Makes me vomit in my mouth!!

So many of you people that witnessed all the drunkeness,the neglect,the fighting,and everything about these POS yet YOU NEVER did anything to stop it!!!!The day that little Blaise had to be pulled out of the pool,were there no men that was not afraid to stand up to that scrawny little weisel there? I am surprised that she only had the one charge. I am sure that "Daddy" paid her way out. How did they support themselves? How did they pay rent to "Daddy"? How could she, a single mother, afford to go out and party? Why hasn't the biological father stepped up to the plate and is he the father of both children? If he signed over his parental rights, then how did she support herself with no child support? Seems the PnC or any other agency hasn't ask these questions. Did anyone here visit the funeral home or go to the funeral?

That "other" woman said in her first article that she was with him for 3 yrs and he beat her up when she was pregnant and at the end, she said she trusted him and left her children with him. Now, not only does this say that he is violent when he drinks, but she just had a drink with him the night before Blaise's death. Makes me wonder what these other kids have been through.

Hopefully, Blaise's sister has a decent family member that will take her in and raise her right. That poor girl is probably so torn up. If you recall Georgoulis's first response to this whole thing. She said that she was body slammed by him and so on. Then said that she left her kids with him. She says here that the media makes him look bad and that he is bad. Well, she is just as bad. I am the step-mom of her two other children. We knew she was with him for awhile but knew nothing about his history or past and when my husband asked her about him, he was told to mind his business. My husband talks to his children weekly and they just spent 6 wks of their summer with us. Melissa has yet to tell my husband about any of this, but we came across it on the internet last Monday and spent most of the past week on the phone with the authorities in Summerville to get more information, with no luck. We live on the other side of the country and we plan to take legal action but have no idea about what attorney to go with in Charleston/Summerville. So if anyone is posting here with a good recommendation for an attorney, please let me know. We are still in shock by all of this and are trying to find the best approach so that the children are not affected anymore.

I am an EMT...and I used to live in the Charleston area. I moved away, but can say that even in the small town I live and work in, we have the same problem. I have recently dealt with the death of a 6 month old due to child abuse...and this is something that should never happen. One user posted a link to a video on UTube...I agree...the song is one that applies...but...I found a video that actually has pictures of abused children in it. Maybe the witnesses should watch this video...maybe they will realize that in my opinion...they are just as guilty as the mother and her boyfriend....to witness this and not call....is inexcuseable. South Carolina law unfortunately does not require Jennifer Spoerl and Justin Hillerby to be neutered after they are convicted and sentenced to lengthy prison terms for child endangerment and murder. Spoerl's cold, defiant mug shot photo emphasizes the calculated neglect and complete lack of remorse that doomed little Blaise to a painful death. Hillerby's callous cruelty and criminal conduct is that of a knuckle-dragging Neanderthal. The prosecutors should not offer these two failed human beings any plea bargains, and the presiding judge should not show them any mercy.

Everytime there is a story about trash like this it is always assumed they live in a trailer.I know of someone who lives in a mobile home and not a great one at that,but he has more money than he can ever spend.I also know some people that live a lot better than I and they are scum in my oppinion. People like this can even come after you for interfering with their quality of life:Next time anyone is witness to something like this that took place at the pool,, make the call and come tell us the response you get::tell us what neighborhood your in also. There are reasons why people don't bother to get involved and until you deal with the whole bunch..come back and tell us your experience

How many times have your tossed your kid into the pool...playing???? or maybe something you have never done nor something I would ever do to a baby, but can you be arrested and have your kids taken because of it? NO. Is calling your kid names abuse? In my book yes....but again...grounds to call authorities because he called his child a pansy..wussy and P&ssy? Second, I never witnessed them hitting the child, hitting each other or even fighting with each other. I did see them drinking and acting obnoxious and cursing like sailors! But again, is that against the law? They walked to the pool, never did I see them drink and put the kids in the car...so again...grounds to turn someone in? No. By no means were they neighbors I wanted to BBQ with, or let my kids hang out at their house. But just because I do not agree with their "parenting skills" does not give me reason to turn them into the authorities! O..and trust me...my husband DID tell that POS about himself more than once and a group of us turned them into the homeowners association for drinking at the pool..that was the only "rule" they broke as far as anyone was concerned. So yes they were foul mouthed drunks who needed a parenting class or two...not upstanding citizens in our subdivision, but to be completely honest...who is anymore?.... if I were to turn in everyone I saw doing a bad job at parenting or doing things I do not agree with...I would have social services on speed dial. I am a nurse and my husband is a teacher...so we have both seen our share of abusive cases and trust me had I seen them that day the baby died at the pool and he fell in and no one did anything to help him...I would have been first on the horn with child protective services.

Summervillechick, I have never tossed my toddler into a pool. And while it is probably not considered abuse, I believe that not supervising a child would be considered neglect, and I believe that public drunkenness is illegal. I don't hold you or the other neighbors responsible for what happened to Blaise, however; that guilt lies with Justin, Jennifer, and the roommates.

And like I said before I was not there when the baby was not being watched...usually they were right there with him! They were also drinking not falling down drunk and I do not carry a breathalizer with me to check my neighbors level of inebriation. there is a fine line when you should and should not put your nose into other peoples lives! NONE of us knew what went on behind closed doors...so finger pointing on who should have done something is crazy! All we knew...the parents were not up for nominations for parent of the year and they were the most annoying people I have ever seen! But that is not grounds to turn someone into social services! Would have have called the police if a neighbor was drinking??? or if that person tossed his/her kid in the pool??? I DOUBT it!
Also who is her dad??? someone with money???is he the one who drives the corvette that is parked at the house?

Summervillechick...I am sure there is no way you could have known what went on in that house and I can't find a single reason to place any of the liability on anyone but Justin and Jennifer. I, personally called DSS and the police (repeatedly) on unfit parents and got nowhere, quick!!! In fact, the children were not removed from the home until approximately 1 year after my first call when the youngest died. The infant was sleeping in his carseat (overnight) vomited while sleeping and drowned in his vomit. The other children were taken because of severe neglect. I was amazed at the lack of care and concern by the authorities (and the thought that our tax dollars pay them to do the right thing sickens me)...
You and your neighbors could not predict what was going to happen nor could you know all that went on in Jennifer's home. Of course, the roomies (party buddies) definately should have stepped in to protect Blaise and Serena but apparently they do not have the sense God gave a brick to realize that something was wrong!!! Shame on them!!!
Summervillechick, don't take offense at some of the posts here and don't allow those who think you should have stepped in to browbeat you. We should all place blame where it belongs and pray that these two are prosecuted and convicted to the fullest extent of the law!
May Balise rest in peace and may Serena never be allowed to go back to the family that neglected and abused her and Blaise!

Shes good but she needs to be home with the people that care about her most. I am not trying to get him out of jail however i still cant and dont want to believe he did it on purpose. i dont know if the media has it correct because i haven't been released that much info. why? yes i went out... with friends to dinner and to a bar afterwards for two hours i came home at 1230 not 145 no i didnt check his room dirrectly but i checked his monitor whch i always do. Blaise was always a lite sleeper. opening the door would have woken him up. i am not a bad mother.... i just stept down at my job for lesser hours cause of them . i am lost right now. they are my life. i am not suicidal however i believe it's only cause i have serena in my life still. losing a child has been really hard and i dont believe i have come to terms with that yet. i wake up thinkin i hear him moving around. Please just support my sanity right now cause thats all i have right now. Thank you for your thoughts and please pray for us... always Jennifer

For the folks who said they both should "rot in jail"...like hell! That would be too good for them. They should both have done to them exactly what that pathetic excuse for a male did to the boy, by someone much larger than they are. Then they should be rendered completely helpless and left to die. Even THAT would be too good for them, but at least they'd have some idea of how much that poor, defenseless child suffered at their equally guilty hands.

I have seen a lot of bad things happen to children with ignorant parents. This tops them all. I have never read a story and been so disgusted. I am sitting her sick to my stomach and in tears thinking about this situation. How could somebody hurt a child...so innocent...Jennifer, the child's mother is just as much to blame. Georgulous is guilty of a lot as well...It seems somebody that is out to get her face in the news after a child dies is just as sick of a human being. On top of it, she is the mother to this sick mans child. What kind of person she's gotta be. I hope for the children's sake, (of both of the mothers) that someone intervenes and puts these innocent children in a good home. I pray for all the innocent children in this situation, Blaise is in a better place, especially better then the hell he was living in before with these sickening people. Not to mention lowlifes.
