Killer gets life without parole

Saturday, September 27, 2008

SUMTER — A man has been sentenced to life in prison without parole after being convicted of killing a man in Sumter County more than four years ago.

The Item of Sumter reported that a jury deliberated less than an hour Thursday before convicting 41-year- old Mark McCoy of murder.

McCoy had been arrested last year in the shooting death of 36-year-old Donald Tyrone Pettis Jr.

Police said McCoy shot Pettis in the back after McCoy and another man, 30-year-old Robyn Dukes, jumped Pettis.

Dukes also is charged with murder and is awaiting trial. He was arrested the day of the shooting but was released on a $30,000 bond.

Dukes is incarcerated in North Carolina, where he faces another murder charge.
