Blunt touts probate experience

The Post and Courier
Friday, September 26, 2008

Associate Dorchester County Probate Judge Mary Blunt is touting experience in her bid to become probate judge.

A Republican, she's running against Democrat Dreama Pruett, a real-estate broker.

Blunt, 37, points out in her campaign literature that she is the only candidate with probate court experience and is the only one with a law degree.

"Quite simply put, Mary Blunt is ... the only candidate qualified to be Probate Judge of Dorchester County," her campaign card states.

The probate court settles wills and estates and appoints guardians for those who can no longer make decisions for themselves.

As associate judge, Blunt presides over cases involving mental health commitments, incapacity, trusts and estates, according to her campaign literature.

She has been working for Probate Judge Tiffany Provence for about a year. Before that she was a probate law attorney for almost 10 years, specializing in trust and estate law and elder law. Blunt was a court-appointed attorney in hundreds of probate cases, according to her campaign literature.

She was born in Florida, grew up in Virginia and moved to Summerville in 1999 when her husband was transferred here with the Air Force Reserve.

She dismissed her opponent's charges that she's a political insider.

"As someone brand-new to the political scene and a non-Summerville native, I find my opponent's allegations that I am a 'political insider' to be comical at best," Blunt said in an e-mail.

Mary Blunt

Birthdate: March 22, 1971.

Family: Husband, Sam, a pilot for the U.S. Air Force Reserve and a commercial pilot; and two children.

Education: University of Virginia School of Law; College of William and Mary (magna cum laude).

Occupation: Associate judge for Dorchester County Probate Court.

Something most people don't know about me: I come from a large, rowdy, Italian family that is so incredibly loud and chaotic that courtroom brawls rarely even raise my eyebrows.

Name a specific goal you hope to accomplish if elected: During my time with the court, Judge Provence and I have actively worked to implement services such as Summerville appointments and court dates, public education seminars, a user-friendly Web site and easier access to public records. I want to continue to build upon these constituent services and develop new ones to ensure we make the Probate or Therapeutic Court process run as smoothly as possible.

Hopefully she is an easy choice for Summerville voters.

Its good to see these conservative women in, or seeking, public office.

They destroy the June Cleaver stereotype that "others" have tried to pin on them....not that anything is wrong w/ June Cleaver.

It just shows there is a good healthy diversity among a group(conservative women) that many try to pigeon hole as all the same.

PS
CB...I'm not so sure your 8:36 post is going to get you out of any hot water from the 8:35 post...I'm just saying...

abit,

I thought the same thing...CB's fingers were communicating with a different head at 8:35 and it took exactly 1 minute for the synapses to fire appropriately.

There's nothing wrong with CB's appreciation of an attractive female. As long as he appreciates what he has at home. And he also seems to be attracted to the ones with brains. Good for him. My SO thinks Kim Kardashian is the hottest thing alive. I'm inclined to agree with him.

I think I'll do a Trust and get rid of my will so I can avoid probate court.

She's definetly easy on the eyes. As for being smart, well that is conjecture at best. Just because you get a degree doesn't make you 'smart'. But she is hot and so is 'Palin

wow, we have hot chics in politics now, sure beats way back when with janet reno LOL

Getting a college degree w/ high honors does indicate a certain degree of "smarts".

Why is it "conjecture at best" to point that out? Ditto on getting into law school & passing the bar.

Of course there is a wide range of "smart" & there are plenty of very smart folks who have not an ounce of common sense.

But associating a certain level of intelligence with a magna cum laude college degree is hardly a conjectural leap.
