BLACKSBURG — Authorities accuse a 28-year-old South Carolina man of shooting an acquaintance in the head during an argument.

The Cherokee County Sheriff's Office charged Woodrow Hayes on Thursday with murder and gun possession.

Chief Deputy Joel Hill said Hayes used a shotgun to kill 31-year-old Benjamin Phillips of Clover about 8:15 p.m. Wednesday, while the two were arguing in his Blacksburg home.

Hill told The Star of Shelby, N.C., that the two men were drinking alcohol but declined to say what they argued about. He said Phillips was unarmed.

Hayes, who turns 29 on Saturday, remained in the Cherokee County jail on Thursday evening. It was unclear if he had an attorney.
