The Point Sports Bar & Grill

Give it up for the Ancient Arabic Order of the Nobles of the Mystic Shrine.

Better known as Shriners, the organization manages to run a network of 22 children's hospitals, providing care at no charge. That's serious benevolence, friends.

And you've gotta love those parade rides — the mini Tin Lizzies, Corvettes and semi-tractor-trailers.

But one thing you might not know about Shriners? They've got a bar and grill next door to the temple.

Jokes aside, the Point Sports Bar & Grill genuinely might have the coldest beer in town, good enough for any Shriner, sports fan or tourist making their way to the aircraft carrier Yorktown.

Not surprisingly, the menu rolls out a selection of bar food. The Philly ($7.95) is a sliced sirloin sandwich with Swiss cheese, grilled onions and peppers. Ernie Brown's meatloaf ($6.95) is made with melted Swiss on ciabatta bread, and the Big Bird is a grilled-chicken sandwich with bacon and Swiss. All sandwiches come with a nice helping of shoestring fries.

Happy hour is 4-8 p.m. weekdays. Mixed drinks and beers start at $2 with all appetizers half-price. That's a sharp deal, kids. Get an order of 10 wings for less than $3 or a sampler platter of wings, chicken tenders, beer-battered onion rings and mozzarella sticks for about $5.

One quibble: It's mighty dark inside, the windows shuttered. Likely it helps reduce glare for the televisions and projection screens, but the shadows have a way of making midday feel like midnight. Best grab another ice-cold Bud Light to relieve the discomfort.
